I'm trying not to make an empath joke about myself haha, but I genuinely do believe that I have always approached every show with empathy. I struggled the most with Gossip Girl since I really did start to feel a deep sense of apathy for everyone halfway through the show, but in that case, I was able to latch onto plot and romance. Even if I don't like a character, I can still appreciate a story they're being given or even in a relationship they have. With Euphoria, I find myself latching onto certain things about each of these characters. Nate/Cal: I categorize these folks together because I hate them with a passion, but I can appreciate the intensity and story they bring to the show, for the most part. Cassie: Cassie this season is a hot mess and a horrible person. But she's reeling from the trauma of an abortion and has been told all her life that her value is in her body and being loved, which is how she is able to express her love. Maddy: Maddy is a good babysitter and a good friend. And she fights racists! Rue: I really connect to Rue's nihilism and her struggles with mental illness, particularly anxiety and depression. You can also tell she is such a sweetheart in many of her interactions, when she is at her most vulnerable. Kat: She's just like me fr! Like idk, she lives inside her head and dramatizes it as a way to deal with it. She's miserable and she hates herself for being miserable. I don't know why I typed this all out lmao - it at least helps me to empathize with these characters because while a lot of them are "bad people," (people with underdeveloped brains marred by trauma, mental illness and an unfortunate world where everyone hates them) a lot of them also need deep psychological help, like, Cassie is ten seconds away from a psychotic break.

2022-08-10 03:22:11 +0000 UTCSometimes, Euphoria just slaps a bunch of stuff together, edits it in quick succession and calls it an episode because what just happened lol I didn't think I'd feel differently about this season as I re-watched it, but I am just reminded of how many things I find bad/irritating about the show in this episode alone. The Kat stuff was insane, but fun at least, and I was excited for this stuff to continue. The character of Cassie/Sydney Sweeney is excessively nude. If they wanted to get across that Cassie is a sexualized character, this is not the way to do it, because all it does is further sexualize Sydney. I'm glad that she didn't feel uncomfortable, but to know there were even more nude/topless scenes for Cassie that were cut is absolutely ridiculous. And it's only done with her, it's just so off-putting and I wish the creator had found better ways to characterize her character other than us seeing her breasts all the time. The other most frustrating part of this season is Jules and whether or not she's able to tell Rue is back on drugs. 1) Rue is high af and she is making it so obvious so Jules kind of looks stupid for not being able to tell and 2) Jules having dealt with a mother as an addict also should be able to tell? Perhaps she subconsciously knows and is ignoring the problem? Or, maybe she's completely clueless. Maybe she even expected Rue to get clean for her, so Rue being on drugs AND in a relationship with her feels mutually exclusive? Idk and I don't think the show knows either lol But I guess we are supposed to assume that Rue's relapse was just marijuana, since that's what Jules saw her smoking with in the previous episode. But yeah, people not knowing that Rue is high is just... bad writing.
