I think you're right about the writers (and the show creator) having a blast with this -- not that it isn't hard work for them too. But they're sort of using the audience's experience watching TV to trick us: Each time we think "oh, I see what sort of show this is now, each episode will do X," they're ahead of us, and derail our expectations. In the first season, we probably figured that Eleanor would confess as the season finale, but she did it halfway through. Then after the actual season finale, we thought "OK, season 2 will be them gradually meeting each other and figuring it out again," and they did that in one episode. And then rebooted the neighborhood 802 more times in the next episode. Whatever we predict, they know and they get ahead of us. That's one of the things that makes the show so special.
