2022-10-11 06:11:58 +0000 UTCYou nailed it. I absolutely agree. I actually do sympathize with his character to a degree until this episode. She is super hot and cold with him with the intense PDA and then not wanting to kiss by the lockers. But, she was clearly saying no, and just once and not playful, either. She kept repeating no and trying to push him off her. It’s clear where it was heading. I can’t speak for a fictional character so maybe he would have eventually “heard” her no, but he already crossed that line and Emily is lucky Toby was there so she didn’t have to find out. I’m actually quite proud of Emily. It was a great character moment for her. She was direct and confident in her choice to end it. Too many girls would find a way to excuse that behavior almost like Brain was, kinda.

That Emily is hot and cold, because she's unsure of herself and her feelings for Maya, and that's confusing to him? And Emily should have just broken up with him like in the pilot tbh because he's a zero character, so they could both move on and be with people who want to be with them. BUT what's not confusing at all is consent. The way you talked about Ben sort of sounded like trying to justify the fact that he heard the word NO repeatedly, and didn't stop. I don't think that's what you *meant*? But just so we're clear, what Ben did is SA, and if Toby hadn't come along, who knows how far Ben would have gone. He DESERVED his ass kicked, and he deserved being dumped like that. It wouldn't matter if Emily was all over him one moment and then decided she didn't want to ever speak to him again, and then repeat. He had no right to touch her without permission. He also had the option to *talk* to Em, and say, "This isn't working for me, Emily. You're off-and-on, and it's confusing for me." and he had the option to end the relationship.

2022-08-22 22:03:38 +0000 UTCit was literally assault. toby had to yank him off him or else it would have gone so very wrong. i haven't watched this episode via his reaction yet but i did rewatch it a few weeks ago and that whole scene (before toby stepped in) made me want to vomit. i may have to skip the reaction to this episode if ben is the one he's sympathizing with.

Even if PDA was something he was used to doing as a boyfriend, if she says no then that means no. that’s why she said toby “saved” her. what would’ve happened if Toby didn’t come and stop Ben? would you still feel sorry for him? I’m glad you’re enjoying the show but i think it’s important to look at it from Emily’s perspective too.

Sean was NOT a good boyfriend in the sense of actually paying any sort of attention to her, which I guess is what she wants most, but if the situation was reversed and the guy was pressuring the girl into having sex, no way would anyone be sympathizing with him. She's too immature to realize sex isn't everything and that even guys want to wait if they're just not ready. It's got nothing to do with being gay.

2022-08-21 11:08:00 +0000 UTCI don't agree with your criticism of Spencer or for you feeling bad for Ben. Spencer is a child. She's at best 16 years old. I'm pretty sure Wren is almost twice her age. This is pedophilia at work here, which is scary because Ezria was clearly a bad relationship but Spencer and Wren flew under the radar. They were selling all these terrible ideas to tween girls about older men and these girls just had no idea how toxic it was. None of Spencer's actions are to be blamed, in my opinion. She reacted the way a girl her age would. Question is, why would a 30 year old man who just got engaged be pursuing a underaged girl? As for Ben, no means no. Even if you're in a relationship with someone. Even if you're married to them. No means no. Emily was right to dump him. She was clearly pushing him away, clearly saying stop, and he didn't listen. Once was enough.

2022-08-20 21:51:18 +0000 UTCI think Allie had the hold she did because for girls, it's very easy to fall into the mindset of "bully or be bullied." They saw how she'd treat her "targets" and they didn't want to give her any cause to inflict that cruelty onto them as well. Even though she was young, I think Allie was straight up abusive. And as any victim of abuse will tell you, it's not all cruelty and mistreatment. Sometimes abusers are kind, soft, gentle even. Allie made the girls feel seen. I touched on Spencer, but I think all the girls fall into a very similar position. Spencer just wants to be heard, listened to - above the voice of Melissa and her parents. Aria's grown ass adult father cheated and expected his child to lie to her mother and maintain her secret. Again, another girl feeling unheard, unseen. Emily, too, so desperately wants to be seen as her own person and accepted and loved by her parents. Hannah deals with food issues and her father abandoning their family. Again, another girl just wanting to be seen and heard. Allie knows how to prey and how to pick. She went after girls who would listen easily and comply with her in a desperate grab for acceptance and friendship, sisterhood and family. I can't fault the girls for falling into Allie's hands. Hell, even the stuff they did wrong because of Allie, I don't fault them to the extent I fault her. She pulled the strings. They got caught up in it all. I think it was very easy for her to manipulate them and for them to stick with her even through some pretty messed up things, just for that sense of longing.

2022-08-20 03:25:52 +0000 UTCI do feel bad for Spencer. Melissa has a right to be upset generally, but Melissa is an adult. Spencer is a child. I am shocked that NO ONE was concerned by the fact that this VERY grown man was interested in a child, so much so that he went into her bedroom at night and made a move on her. Honestly, if I was Spencer's mother, that would be my number one concern. Spencer responded just as a teenager would/should and I appreciate how Troian played that moment. I also like that Spencer knows that she made her own fair share of mistakes while recognizing that she is not responsible for what Wren did and thus for the failure of Wren and Melissa's relationship And although PLL doesn't frame a lot of these relationships as creepy like they should, unfortunately, too many men are like that in real life. Also, Ben tried to sexually assault Emily and has been consistently annoying and creepy. She had every reason in the book to break up with him. Also, Sean is not a very good boyfriend, but, to me, he was very clear to Hanna that he wants to wait. Sure, that could just be societal Christian pressure, but he said that it came from himself. For some reason, guys get taken less seriously or get called gay when they choose to wait/not have sex, but maybe he just has an ounce of self-control and a backbone to stick with what he believes in?

Also FYI, if you ever use the skip intro, it’s messed up here. You mentioned it earlier showing up before intro even started. If you press it, it’ll forward however seconds intro was, even if it’s not at the intro yet and you’ll miss actual scenes before intro and prob forward to intro hitting it. Just ignore that button. HBO messed up markers for that for this show.
