CABARET is a 1966 musical that was filmed in 1972. As it's going to come up repeatedly this season, maybe you won't mind a brief summary to get you oriented. It's not *essential* to know something about it, but I think it helps (and they kind of assume that we do). The central character (the one Moira played in 1979) is Sally Bowles, a girl with perhaps more ambition than talent who's trying to make it as a nightclub singer in Berlin in the 1930s, just as Naziism is beginning to emerge. Cliff (the role Patrick was auditioning for) is her love interest, but the more important male role is the Master of Ceremonies at the club, who talks and sings directly to us as a kind of narrator, commenting in song or speech on what we've just seen. The movie won a number of Academy Awards, including acting awards for Liza Minnelli (as Sally) and Joel Grey (as the Master of Ceremonies, whom he had also played onstage).
