Ironically, Spike also said "you were my Yoda". As this episode was released in January 1999, Star Wars Episode I had not come out yet, so the original statement by Obi-Wan that Yoda was his teacher was still accurate because no one had heard of Qui-Gon yet. So there is some symmetry there to the siring line. ;-)

Spike was originally intended to be a minor villain in season 2 with The Anointed One (or Annoying One as Spike liked to say) being the main big bad. However in-between filming Season 1 and Season 2 the actor started to age and his voice started changing which kind of ruins the whole immortal thing. Therefore Spike got upgraded to have a more substantial role and The Anointed One was killed off. I think you caught on to this about Spike. He is impulsive, but he's smart. A lot of people think it's odd that he ran away after getting hit by Joyce, but I always saw it as Spike being smart. Fighting a slayer is hard enough, but fighting one on his own with family and friends to back her up wasn't worth the risk. MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS (just wanted to explain the whole who sired who thing since it takes a while to develop and isn't a major plot point, but stop reading if you don't want to know. Some of it has already been revealed and I didn't mention names for those that haven't been revealed) Darla sired Angel. Angel sired ___________. And __________ sired Spike. Typically sire would refer to the person that bit them however it has a different meaning here. When Spike calls Angel his sire he really just means a mentor. Someone who taught him how to be a vampire.
