Love everything you said and yes Elle officially joined the team in episode 2. It was mentioned in passing during episode 1 that she was trying to get in the BAU for a long time. Also, I don't even think the drunk guy was trying to outsmart him. He certainly was trying to save his life, but I think he genuinely believed in what he was saying about the government and figured that saying it would mean that he was on his side thus not someone to shoot. You know I'm still wondering what the Christian was going to do with that gun. Because everything involved with it is a sin, whether it's killing the ex-wife or himself. Wish we got a little more on that. Also he said Elle wasn't really as useful as Reid and I'm curious what you think about that.

While the BAU does most frequently work on profiling and catching serial killers, some times they are called in when their special profiling techniques will be useful, i.e. this episode and the episode where the politician’s daughter was kidnapped. This was certainly less high profile than the other one, but they were useful to talk with someone in the middle of a severe psychotic episode. Although that young guy was annoying, I don’t think there was a way to “punish” him, other than him being killed, which would have been a little cruel imo. Some personalities are just totally awful to have in a hostage situation, and I appreciate how they showed it here. He was thinking about self-preservation and it just backfired. So, while he was stupid and was making it worse, it felt realistic to how some people think they can outsmart others and get out and save themselves. Some people can’t just sit down and shut up. And it sometimes cost lives. I really love how the team came together to save Elle. Obviously, Gideon took the lead again, but Morgan working with Garcia to get information on the hostages, Hotch taking lead on communicating with SWAT team, etc. I REALLY loved how everyone prepped Reid to go into train and even the fact that Derek was going to go instead and that Gideon was going to call it off. Tells us a lot about the team and more about who these characters are (Morgan trying to protect Reid, Gideon’s past with losing six agents.) Also, I’m pretty sure Elle is new to the BAU. She was promoted in the first or second episode, I think.
