I think its more like you dont truly pay attention. It has been mentioned that prior to Patty drowning, she had an affair with Sam and broke up with her husband. Just like it was mentioned that the grandmother pushed the dad out of the girls lives. 1 mortal against an old powerful witch, but we are going to constantly harp on the dad being 100% the looser scumbag who just walked away from his kids on his own for no reason?
