The pattern is extra on top of what they were already doing. In a previous episode there was the easter egg that hints that the xfiles (or maybe just the equivalent for this story universe) happened in the past, so they have been investigating generally strange cases for a long time. The pattern became something they started investigating after realising there were connections between many of the fringe cases. At least that is how I see it. Also I can't tell if you missed the ending, but the brother survived. And it's hinted that they sent the brother, and the alien attached to him, back into space.
