This is a must watch show! This is really one of the funniest best show of all time. I think HBO Max has the full versions of the episode aswell so I would recommend watching it on there if you continue. For me, season 1 was a little difficult for me. It's one of my least favorite and even Martin himself was unlikable until the series goes along. I feel after season 1 you will get this show popularity. Season 1 has it's great moments though but it just gets much better.

I do think Martin’s Shenehneh character does fall into some pretty offensive caricatures of black women however, but yeah, I agree it’s not inherently offensive. It’s also not inherently funny, either, which is where we sometimes run into issues comedically.

2024-02-18 17:59:40 +0000 UTCmaybe i'm just ignorant but i really don't think a guy dressing up and playing a female character for laughs is by default offensive. if it was done to make fun of trans people or something then yeah. but this was an era of medea and mrs doubtfire. it was just a comedy thing of the time. i think the carole burnett show even did it as well. one of my favorite films is some like it hot, which was groundbreaking at the time and still is to this day. i think it can be offensive at times when a male character does pretend to be a female character but i don't think every instance of it happening is automatically offensive by default.

Men playing female characters is always weird to me too, but at least martin plays a bunch of characters that are also male. It’s mainly just for budgeting. I love Martin tho, extremely funny once you get past the first season. But it’s definitely a show where you have to abandon you standards/morals about things cuz some stuff would definitely be seen as problematic in this day and age. Martin is definitely not supposed to be seen as the most likeable right away, takes some time

2024-02-17 19:08:10 +0000 UTCIf I'm remembering correctly, Martin definitely took a little time to warm up too. Season 1 was rough for me, but I remember being into Season 2 and 3 especially. My family owned the entire show on DVD, and when we didn't have cable, this show was played back-to-back. I still don't remember the earlier episodes, but that's because I assume we mostly played through Season 2-Season 4! I think Martin being "unlikeable" is almost the point. Think of some of the popular, more brash radio or podcast hosts. They gain a following because of their persona, their outlandish opinions and the way they deliver them. I see Martin in that light kind of and we get to make fun of him through it all because he's a ridiculous character. He's also kind of got a short complex lol We also see the Gina and Martin relationship develop over five seasons, but yeah, in this episode, she shouldn't have let him win like this lol Martin dressing up as women is definitely more of the time. It is simply something that comedians did in sketch comedy and for some cases like this one, it spread into the format of this show. If it also helps, he doesn't only play female characters. There are at least three other characters I can think off the top of my head that he plays and at least one of them is funnier lol I never really LOVED when comedians did that in the first place, honestly, but I do find some Shenehneh and Mama moments funny. I also think the surrounding cast of Martin is GREAT and really helps round it all out.
