also i want to bring up christopher. oh christopher lol for me i think he's lorelei's "what if..." and in her mind at this point he's always been in the back of her mind as that "what if..." - this sort of fictionalized make believe story of what could be. it also doesn't help matters that he's rory's father and i'm sure she holds onto the idea of him also with the desire to have that family she never really had growing up. christopher symbolized a lot of things to her when she was young. primarily freedom and being wanted. now adult lorelei still is trying to untangle those feelings of freedom and the desire to be wanted but they're so closely intertwined with the concept of christopher that it's difficult for her to truly do that.

i think max went into this with certain expectations he shouldn't have placed on her. i think in his head he imagined lorelei as "calming down" and settling down a bit. i think they just aren't very well matched and i honestly wonder why he perused her so hard so fast. this is gonna sound mean but if he just wanted to have some fun with her, that's what it should have been. he seemed to want to settle down and commit but not to who lorelei is as a person. it's weird to me. he seems like the kind of guy who wouldn't be into someone like lorelei but then he perused her so hard and fast only to seem a bit annoyed with her at times for not fitting into this mold he had envisioned. lorelei needs someone who will love her and accept her where she's at. she's still very mentally young and has her faults. but max doesn't seem to want to commit to that person. instead he wants a version of lorelei he has in his head and i don't think that's fair to her.

lorelai truly is such a beautiful, complex character. i love and relate to her so much that watching the show for the first time was almost a little jarring—i felt like i was seeing myself.
i want to break down lorelai’s relationships with three of the men who appear with her this episode based on my understanding of her as a person.
firstly, of course, max: the plain and simple truth is that they were never made to last. he’s not a bad person by any means, but he isn’t right for her. to marry a guy like max, you have to be relatively one dimensional, accepting of change, and willing to give up a lot of your independence. lorelai isn’t any of those things, and her upbringing makes total sense as to why. her independence is all she feels that she has—she holds it so dear to her because she didn’t have any room to make any of her own decisions growing up. she carries so much emotional baggage that most people don’t see until she lets you. she has a really hard time letting her guard down around people because, after she got out of her parents house, she did everything possible to provide a life for herself and rory. on the show, we never saw lorelai and max discussing this emotional baggage—yes, he knew that she has a very tense relationship with her parents and that she had rory very young, but that was about it. lorelai warned him in the beginning, but max didn’t listen—this wasn’t a normal household he was walking into. lorelai and max are too different, and not the type of different they can learn to deal with. the type of different that makes them totally incompatible.
christopher: i alluded to this before, but lorelai carries a lot of trauma with her, and christopher has a lot to do with that. between her (im sorry, but in my opinion) mentally abusive parents and her teen pregnancy, lorelai hasn’t had it easy. in a lot of ways, she’s emotionally stunted at the age that she was when she had rory. i think it’s easy to see rory right now in season 1/2 as the cute teenager she is who is mainly only worried about dating,
school, and college—the way it should be—but when lorelai was rory’s age, she already had an infant daughter to take care of. lorelai and christopher are definitely trauma bonded. when lorelai is feeling lost, she unconsciously goes back to him because he, in her mind, is the safest option—she thinks she knows everything she’ll get from him because she’s known him so long. i hate christopher and i hate him for her, but that’s why her first instinct was to call him when she started to realize her marriage to max wasn’t a good idea for anyone involved.
luke: i absolutely adore the scene at the end with him and lorelai because it really sums up his character so well. he is clearly in love with lorelai, but, before anything, he is her friend and he wants the best for her, no matter what. this is why everything comes full circle at the end: he always puts her first. in his own words, marriage can work if “they don’t want to change you”. with max, lorelai can never truly be lorelai, with all of her faults and shortcomings. with christopher, lorelai unconsciously regresses into the scared 16 year old girl looking for something she thought was safe. luke, for all of his gruff exterior, would never want to change anything about lorelai. he fell in love with the real her.
