I think you are supposed to just see L as a Sherlock Holmes type. They have already said multiple times he is supposed to be one of the best detectives there is and has solved several cases that no one else could. Sherlock Holmes was the same,seeing things no one else could and making crazy connections. I think if you take it that way it makes more sense for how L is figuring things out.
