THE PINK POPCAST PODCAST #73: Rewriting The Twilight Saga

Comments

I too, once had a moment in the theater where I said something out loud and it made a bunch of people laugh. It was during Deathly Hallows 2. My bother and I were cracking jokes about how slow Snape talks... then as his death scene was happening, I just huffed & said 'Ugh, he even dies slow'... then everyone in the vicinity started laughing. I was so proud of myself for making a funny 😏😹

That would be interesting to know more internally and existentially what’s going on and not exclusively the love story… Maybe midnight sun gives a little bit more of that

and vampires (angels or fae), in the books, are terrifying and kind of a miserable existence. I can understand why Edward angsts about it.

I always wondered if we could go more deep into Bella’s want and wishes. She’s interesting as a trans human—girl who doesn’t feel like she’s apart one world and wants to be in another. But she would be giving everything up. Everything.

Loved this, esp the rewrite of the Imprinting, thank you Jesus. The Bella-Charlie to Renesmee pipeline thing is an interesting edit. I liked how Rizzo explained what he thought was weird about Eclipse bc tbh I never really understood the aversion to it, book or movie-wise. When you put it like that I understand the dislike, but I still very much like this installment for its take on young vampires and the the introduction to Bree Tanner and her story. Except Jasper being from the Confederate army, fuck that. We had many conflicts he could have been a part of in the South or South America. Back to Bella & her narrative agency/being the protagonist and thus having to be the one shaping the world/story around her, yes you make a point about her seeming to influence the events around her less and less as the series goes on after New Moon, or at least being less centered. Meyer originally wrote the story with only Twilight + Breaking Dawn (so Edward doesn't leave, there are no shapeshifters/werewolves aside from Sam & those other two, and no newborn army)--Victoria making it to be killed in this version of BD. I think her editor or publisher wanted her write more than a duology, so she did but didn't really know how to marry that lore expansion we get in Eclipse with what Rizzo is saying about the character arc of belonging Bella has so that they intertwine well enough and inform the other without superseding what he and some others wanted and expected from Bella's arc. I have thoughts, but they are a lot, and I don't want to turn this into an essay. Bonus: Vampires do not get over their lovers (death or otherwise), or as they call them "mates". They are mentally and emotionally incapable of doing so. And because they are also very territorial and instinctual creatures with super speed, strength, etc. (are used to feeling very powerful), when their "mates" dies, they tend to go on revenge missions to destroy their mates' killers and they do not let up until they are dead. Or whoever they feel will "make up" for that loss, as Victoria decides to kill Edward's "mate" so he can feel the pain she feels forever. This is also why, Benji, she's so relentless and appears every once in a while to see if she can get to Bella in New Moon, when Bella's at her most seemingly vulnerable.

Ironically enough, I (Rizzo) definitely disagree with Benji on the whole "Removing Victoria" idea. It could have been written MUCH BETTER tho

With all the talk of steaks/stakes, I'm surprised the break up stake didn't show up here. Also, just in my opinion, as much as I would love to just lift Victoria out of the story, her presence in Forks is the catalyst for the Boys to phase and become wolves. They 'feel the threat in their blood'. But I agree Victoria didn't need to be around for 3 damn movies.
