I agree with Rizzo, for how shocked everyone was I didn't find the 'gross' stuff that disturbing, I think it just got oversold in that aspect tbh. Also, the bathtub scene and the eating out scene are v close together, and then he doesn't do anything that weird or graphic ever again (Farleigh handjob and dirt-fucking aren't on the same level). There needed to be an escalation there, to make it feel to the audience like his obsession was ramping up and then we'd have suspense around what he would do next and how far he would go. I was also let down by absolutely no follow-thru on the tantalizing thread that Felix brought someone new every year and something happens to them!? Kind of feels like the 'reveal' at the end in a way absolves the whole family, disregarding all the unethical shit that I'm sure every single one of them did, like, 'aw poor rich people'. Praise Barry and the director for actually showing full-frontal dick in a major movie, I'm tired of how dick-shy Hollywood is.

I very much dislike the 'showing Oliver's machinations' part of this movie, partially because of exactly what you're saying that now every loose thread from the rest of the story is like 'Why isn't this in the montage then?!' So yeah, your rambling makes perfect sense haha. (The typing reveal is the probably the hardest I've laughed at a movie this year...)

2024-02-10 08:41:16 +0000 UTCNo I definitely understand WHY and WHEN Oliver lied about his father's death, but I'm frustrated with the filmmaker essentially lying to us (the audience) by including a scene where his mom calls but NOT later revealing how/why that call might have connected to Oliver's lie. Obviously I'm not stupid and could "assume" Oliver got a call from his mom and then later decided to lie about his parents BUT, since the film doesn't show us that (after painstakingly showing us every other twisty reveal) then I'm led to assume that the filmmaker showed us those two scenes together to "trick us." Without motivation, that phone call from his mom has nothing to do with the plot (which wouldn't be a problem if this wasn't the SAME MOVIE that did a "reveal" on Oliver typing gobbledy gook lol) Hope that ramble makes sense

2024-02-10 08:11:24 +0000 UTCI think Oliver lying about his father's death is actually projected pretty well, to the point where I've seen a couple reactors pick up on it on a first watch. The main hint is that it happens immediately afer Felix gets mad at him and doesn't invite him out to the pub, clearly losing interest. Put that together with the fact that we've already seen Felix being nosy about Oliver's family life and showing a lot of interest in his 'tragic backstory', I was immediately suspicious about the timing when he went to him crying about his dead dad right when Felix was starting to push him away. Also, Oliver doesn't poison Felix's drink until after Felix rejects him. And although they don't make it clear, I think he probably just dumped a bunch of cocaine into it-- that explains why the death isn't considered suspicious (just an OD at a wild party with rampant drug use) and why Farleigh could potentially be blamed for it.

2024-02-09 21:27:51 +0000 UTCI always assumed that the dorm room scene with Oliver trying to clean up was his way of testing how Felix would react to him trying to take control of him. It doesn't go well so he switches focus to the family, getting close to them in hopes of controlling Felix. I think it's definitely purposeful that Felix never bends to Oliver and I agree with Benji that there does seem to be a shift in planning once he sees his ability to manipulate the others. Felix is no longer necessary. I also think there's some truth in Duncan's line that "lots of people get lost in Saltburn" when he says it to Oliver. Part of him changes with the location.
