EXCLUSIVE REACTION: Fellow Travelers 1x05

So there are three timelines in this episode Late 1950s- we know because of tims army uniform; the confessional scene was shown twice, the second time adding the “give yourself to god” line to show why Tim is so distant. He also says that he is celibate besides masturbation and when hawk and him are together, he won’t let hawk touch him because of this vow. The talk about the meeting of needs, hawks affair with the contractor, and hawk and Lucy deciding to have kids are all in that late 1950s timeline 1968- the bulk of the episode; Tim had helped protesting the Vietnam war by burning draft cards Present day- not a whole lot The style of hair and dress is very distinct to the timeline they are in It is hinted that Jackson, hawks son is suffering from depression, ie “ I think there is something wrong with me”- he is is moody/“sensitive”, pulling away from family and possibly stealing (the cop says teenagers are stealing from homes near the cabin, then hawk finds the watch in Jackson’s room but it is left ambiguous as to if he really stole it or if hawk just convinced himself that with Jackson’s attitude it was him), his poem hints at being lost/lonely and finally Jackson takes drugs to try and numb himself leading to the LSD trip. Frankie has been touring off and on for years, and while all the gaps are filled, it seems like Marcus pulls away to take care of his dad. Frankie decides to leave which is why they meet up again. The girl helping with Marcus’s dad is the ex he was going to see at Christmas time in episode 4. I actually really appreciated this episode because I feel like it gives a lot of context to everyone. Lucy and hawk are so caught up in appearances that Lucy sees Tim’s letter and still decides to stay with hawk. In episode 4 hawk said Lucy always swears that she’ll marry for love, but we see that isn’t the case. Lucy sleeps with her best friend’s husband(the party was for their wedding anniversary) because she’s lonely. Hawk is able to connect with his daughter(we see them laughing and hanging out, she is at the party with his grandchild in episode 1) because she doesn’t ask questions. Jackson’s too curious for his own good, and he picks up on the lies in the house which really seem to mess with him.
