I played SO much Death Stranding this weekend. It's a weird game for sure but it's got it's hooks in me. And I imagine certain people will get the appeal too.
I was surprised that the entire game economy was focused around "likes" and making your "total likes" go up. It's such a weird thing, and an explicit commentary on addiction to likes in social media. Kojima has replaced subtlety with abstraction, juxtaposition of unrelated concepts to form a fractured picture. It works for some people, but some people like me enjoy Picasso and Rothko. But it's also not for everyone.
It's a surprisingly cute game in places. That's Kojima for you. It's also a weird inappropriate and sometimes ugly game. That's also Kojima for you. I talked with a friend about how Kojima films EVERYTHING with a sexualized lens. People traditionally call it Male Gaze, and it's apparent in Death Stranding. Nearly everything gets the slow panning closeup treatment.
