The Monster Squad (1987) - Full Reaction

It wasn’t in this movie but ever since I watched it, “monster mash” has been stuck in my head. It’s a problem! This was so 80s and the perfect amount of festive and silly and fun! That creature looked pretty legit too haha

The Monster Squad (1987) - Full Reaction

I was a kid back then but I think we still thought of the many cringe parts as such when this came out. But I love Universal Monsters and this is a rare movie where I get to see a team up, so I always liked this one.

You said "It was super cringey, but my childhood nostalgia made it tolerable." Does that mean if your watch with Cassie's reaction was a first watch, then likely would not be tolerable? That's me, but I looked for aspects to like. Seems more directed to kids. I see that "Trick 'R Treat" (2007) has Anna Paquin -- she was hot the year after in True Blood in 2008.

I bought "Monster Squad" on 4K Blu-ray LAST YEAR purely because of my nostalgic remembrance of watching it on TV as a kid. TBH I always assumed that it was a TV movie because I remember all of my school friends talking about it after it aired. But apparently, it did have a theatrical release. It's a CRIME against cinema that this movie had a theatrical run, but "TRICK 'R TREAT" (2007) didn't!!! I didn't even get around to watching it last year. I watched it for the first time in 35 years with Cassie's reaction. The movie was super cringey, but my childhood nostalgia made it tolerable. Perhaps if I had watched Monster Squad as many times as I watched "The 'Burbs" maybe I'd remember it more fondly -- but who am I kidding. "The 'Burbs" is an infinitely better fun-and-not-too-scary movie. I appreciate Cassie watching this one for the fans, but I really hope she does watch "Trick 'R Treat" (2007)... eventually. PLEASE watch it, Cassie!

I love this movie so much. I watched in the theater when I was 10 years old and probably watched it every year or every other year after that until I was an adult. Now I get to watch it with my oldest kid who is 7 and she loved it too. It's face covering cringe in some parts but that's what makes it so much fun to this day. Man I wish I could go back and live through 80's pop culture all over again.

So I checked the credits and it's not her, but one of the pantry vampire girls I thought looked just like Calista Flockhart, aka Ally McBeal, aka future Mrs. Harrison Ford. It's funny that this is an '87 movie, yet the cinematography reminds me more of a 1980 film. I did spot a My Pet Monster doll in the guy's room, which I also had in '87 when I was 4.
