[YT Edit] The Blair Witch Project (1999)

Hey guys! Here is the YT edit for "The Blair Witch Project" which will premiere shortly!

[YT Edit] The Blair Witch Project (1999)

Comments

Blair Witch has about 8k more views than The Fly at the same stage. So far Carrie is about half way in between the 2. None of which are on the pace of even the least viewed GOT reaction. I think that may change soon with Train to Busan and Final Destination though.

Cole Jennett

Blair Witch (1999) = 76k YT views after 2 days. Not too bad. --Better than Scream 2. --More than twice as many views as Monster Squad. --May catch The Fly. Carrie (1976) – 43k (19 hours) **Blair Witch (1999) – 76k (2 days)** GoT S2E7-E8 – 87k (6 days) *Scream 2 (1997) – 48k (8 days) *The Monster Squad (1987) – 37k (10 days) GoT S2E5-E6 – 96k (13 days) The Fly (1986) – 83k (2 weeks) Stepmom (1998) – 41k (3 weeks) Superman (2025) – 145k (3 weeks) GoT S2E1-E2 – 110k (3 weeks) A.I. (2001) – 63k (1 month) To Catch a Thief (1955) – 47k (1 month) KPop Demon Hunters – 87k (1 month) Sin City (2005) – 77k (1 month) GoT S1E3-E4 – 134k (1 month) Bringing up Baby (1938) – 36k (2 months) Bridesmaids (2011) – 159k (4 months)

Think it was the most profitable movie in history for a decade or so.

Chris Thom

I seen this at the Thearter with my 15 yr old nephew. It was marketed as real footage found. And real.Later found out it was cheap movie to make and made millions but not real ! It was more intense when you thought it was real. After it was like Lam ! Was promoted well .

Tim C

Yeah, that ending.

Clay F

Thanks for this reaction, Cassie. I saw this movie on opening night in the theater, and the internet hype around it was huge, and made it seem very real. It's nice to see that even without all that viral marketing, it still remains an effective scary movie without ever once showing us the "monster" and instead letting us gradually become terrified with the protagonists. Hopefully you've had a chance to look into the making of this one, as you'll have found that a lot of the film was ad-libbed, and in some cases, the actors' reactions to things happening around them were totally genuine.

Rick Moreno

Great reaction! The ending is still eerie as heck...

Jens Kristensen

When I saw the movie back in the days on VHS, therefore when the "Is it real?" mystery had been long spoiled, it did not work for me at all. I thought it was boring and ridiculous. HOWEVER, when I went to bed that night, I was suddenly really scared when I started to think of all that stuff, like the story of that creepy woman covered in hair, all those noises at night and of course the ending. Also completely random: The first time that I had ever heard of it was in an interview with director Vincenzo Natali, who was just making a name for himself with CUBE, who seemed to be aware that it was fake, but still called it one of the scariest things he saw in a while, after he caught it at a festival.

CJ Holden

Creative, especially at the time. Admittedly, I didn't really give it a chance back then. Her reaction to True Detective S1 is excellent.

Clay F

It does show him, Flag. It's at 29:13.

Clarence Newman

In the lead up to October, when it was suggested that Blair Witch might be watched, I was so hoping that Cassie would be able to go in blind without having the truth of it spoiled for her. There were quite a few comments that did that, but the camerawork and ad-libbed dialogue was so ingenious, it put enough doubt in her mind early, that she was able to experience it the right way. If I'd known ahead of time that the whole thing was fake, I would probably have scoffed at it too, but for the unique cinematic experience it gave me, I'm real glad I didn't.

Clarence Newman

Opinion seems to be split in two. Those who fell for the marketing (me, sir) love and applaud it, those who went in knowing it was fake feel contempt and think it's crap. I almost feel sorry for those who had the experience spoiled for them, because if you think it's real, it really is a trip.

Clarence Newman

saw this in cinema and laughed. a lot. my gf was not amused. 🤭 blair witch is why i hated cloverfield in cinema. looking up someone's nose while something sounds scary off camera is not why i got to the movies. 😂

Ignis Rændl

I rem pranking my teen son that Paranormal Nightmare was actual found footage and it scared the crap out of him lol

Jayson Phillips

Omg PLEEEEEAAASSE tell me where this top is from? I love the scalloped neckline! I will be eternally grateful! <3 Also, amazing reaction as always!

G

Sleeping in jeans is indeed terrifying. So true, Cassie.

Chris Thom

Bob - have a local legend where I live too called the Witch’s Graveyard, which was a real place (I’ve been there 4 or 5 times). It’s a little yard with just 3 graves in the woods that surround the local reservoir. The weirdest thing about it is it’s completely surrounded by a low stone wall, with no openings, to go in you have to climb over the stone wall. And the 3 graves only have bases - no headstones. This is where the legend comes in. The story goes a group of teens drove out there one Halloween night and stole one of the headstones. On the way home they supposedly went off the road and crashed for no apparent reason, killing them all. The headstone was said to have been in the car but mysteriously disappeared later. Cool story, no verification though.

Richard Maurer

She's been debuting some hilarious facial expressions this October. Not sure how to even describe some of them. Lol. I know you're not a fan of Scream series but there's an incredible Cassie jump scare in that vid if you haven't seen it yet.

Chris Thom

Tossing in yet again for those who might not have seen it yet - this film is IMMEASURABLY better if you watch the companion documentary that was originally made to air with the film but later used for promotional purposes. It explains so much and adds a great deal to the viewing experience. https://www.shoots.video/video/curse-of-the-blair-witch-1999/

Story Archer

Washington Irving was from the Northeast. Would imagine early settlers were maybe more superstitious and magical-thinking than many in Europe at the time (Salem Witch Trials). That Skinwalker Ranch show is pretty wild. The amalgamation of legends and supernatural and UFOs is a lot for one property. I can't stop watching that dumb a-- show but it's so addictive. Lol

Chris Thom

Good reaction Cassie. And I literally lol’d during the faux Blair Witch part of the Thrive ad. And considering I rarely lol at anything, that was a major accomplishment.

Richard Maurer

The p*rn parody sounded waaaay too likely. And there it is. Lol

Chris Thom

The YT edit didnt show the guy standing in the corner. Nice thrive market project. The list was doing nothing for no one.

🏁 🎥 🎸 💔

When this movie came out, it became quite the phenomenon, with people coming out with their own parodies of the movie, such as The Dorothy Gale Project (a Wizard of Oz version) & an adult series of films called the Bare Wench Project, starring late adult film star Julie Strain in the title role as the Bare Wench. I'm fairly certain that Cassie would have zero interest in watching that parody version of this film, but there might be a few who would be interested.

Donald Fleming

Vaguely remember some people being pissed when they showed up at the MTV Movie Awards and revealed it was an ad campaign.

Chris Thom

Good ol' VHS.

Chris Thom

Nice thumbnail

🏁 🎥 🎸 💔

Think they're called thumbnail but not sure if it applies to the bigger photos.

Chris Thom

Read the Wikipedia entry about this movie .

Tim Brown

I saw this comment and had to watch the ad. Very enjoyable.

kaiielle

Bet that was fun making the ad, some acting roles in the future then. I wonder what the other shoppers were thinking though haha

Gray

I saw this movie in the theater in the middle of the day and was STILL freaked the hell out afterwards. This movie is so good at making you feel uneasy, and the way they marketed this movie, we were all half convinced this was real footage, which made it even more terrifying. It's all made up, though, no worries.

In Middle Tennessee, we have our own folklore witch/legend, The Bell Witch. Dating from 1817, the ghost of the Bell Witch was said to haunt an Adams, TN, farmer’s family (the Bell family), particularly his young daughter. Growing up, the legend was that, if you looked in a mirror and said the Bell Witch’s name 3 times, she would appear and spirit you away. As kids, my cousin and I tried it in the bathroom mirror at his home. Not surprisingly, nothing happened. But it is one of the most well documented “hauntings” in North America and several books have been written about it. Here’s a link to a guided tour of the (in)famous Bell Witch Cave. https://www.bellwitchcave.com

Growing up in Ireland, I really relate to the folklore aspect, even simple things like a menhir (standing stone) in your field is surrounded by folklore, and history here. My dad used to tell me not to touch it because the fairies would come out and kidnap me, which, of course, made me stay well away from the stone. So I imagine some Americans underestimate just how much folklore exists in their own country, even though the United States itself has only been around for 249 years. You’ve got Native American legends that go back thousands of years, European settler stories that mixed with local traditions, and African and Caribbean folklore, the list goes on. Every region and state has its own tales: Appalachian witches, New England ghosts, Skinwalkers in Navajo culture, and the La Llorona stories of the Southwest from Latin American folklore to name a few examples. It's one of the reasons I adore The X-Files, because it highlights so much of the folklore of the United States. The same applies to the Men in Black comics, which deal with everything supernatural and paranormal, not just aliens as the films suggest. And it’s not something a lot of people think of when they hear “the United States,” because they don’t expect a country so young to have these types of stories and folklore. Or maybe it’s because UFOs and Bigfoot overshadow everything else, people forget that there's more beyond these two. Folklore is just really interesting :)

I remember seeing this at the cinema at the time and because the internet was still in its infancy the talk about this film was mostly word of mouth. I remember not being entirely sure if it was actual discovered found footage re-cut into the movie, or if it was a film in the found footage style discovered at a film festival and re-cut (better sound etc) into a movie. I like that they had to set the period in the earlier 90s due to the proliferation of mobile phones by the late 90s. The thought that three students wouldn’t have a mobile phone in 1999 was already unbelievable.

Ria Grix

This was passed around in VHS (part of the campaign) on campus almost six months before the movie came out. It scared a boatload of people 😂

Randy

1:36 You're the best movie reactor there is, Cassie! The movie hasn't even started and you make yourself jump!

JONATHAN REDFERN WILLIAMS

Off topic: RIP Spaceman aka Ace Frehley, cofounder and lead guitarist of KISS.

Anthony Carlson

The Blob is a dated low budget film, but,it's a scary movie with a 25 year old teenage McQueen and a monster no one would want to meet up with in a grocery store or a theater.🔴

Celeste McAllister🍓

I grew up in this kind of rural locale where this movie takes place and we had our share of mysterious wonderings especially about the Knupe's property which was way off this backroad and had two old cabins with two old gravestones out front. We used to go there to party and chat after school because it was abandoned and one time we went there, about seven of us, and a third gravestone had appeared next to the other teo. It was new but the date of passing on it matched the other two but the birth date was much younger, a teenager. And once we went inside one of the cabins and found a homemade poster that said Welcome Home! at the top and underneath was a drawn family of fyet holding up the Welcome Home! part like a banner but they only had eyes and noses, but no mouths. It was so creepy looking my brother dropped his beer and said, "Let's get out of here! Let's get out of here!"

Robert Jewell

I know I've mentioned this before, but thought I'd mention this again. Here is a couple of retrospective documentaries on it that were made just a year or two after it's release. The first is a UK Channel 4 documentary hosted by British critic, Mark Kermode, that includes interviews with the cast and directors. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6nsdofj9H-8 The 2nd one is a BBC documentary series, I Love 1999, hosted by Heather Donohue herself, talking about major cultural events that happened in 1999. They discuss The Blair Witch Project (1999) at 7:40 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5kcxsrQVVvo

JONATHAN REDFERN WILLIAMS

I saw this as a teenager. I found it very spooky.

MGCR

This was one of the most brilliant marketing campaigns of the time. This film was really ground zero for the term "going viral". It was sold to the public as an actual documentary. They had all kinds of "evidence" and extras that was posted on the website before it came out. It pretty much launched the found-footage genre of films that led to movies like Cloverfield and Chronicle. It also utilized the Hitchcockian-style of filmmaking where you don't really see anything. You're left to use your imagination and that can be even more terrifying.

OneManReactionFaction

She’s wearing a toque, eh? +1 for THE MIST, Celeste!

Above Average Dave

I know horror is big for a lot of fans, but I will be glad when we hit November. I don't watch horror. I would love to see someone react to mire of the classic monster movies. But the ones that show blood and savage death are a hard pass for me. Know Blair Witch isn't quite that type, but still a pass. Maybe, something like the Blob with Steve McQueen.

William Brownlee

This movie gets a surprising amount of hate. It’s baffling I tell you

Rosario Cicero

It's a good reaction.

Mark Vaderr

Oh boy, here we go LOL Bwahahahahahahahahahahaha

Edgar Gonzalez

One of the best thumbnails you've ever posted!🤣🤣🤣

Mark Vaderr

Love that thumbnail!!👌😍 what has to be one of the least scariest movies of the 90s,'The Mist' is a Stephen King nightmare....

Celeste McAllister🍓

That’s a great picture. (Idk what to call it.)

Uncle Phoenix

I've never seen this movie, remember when it came out but never got around to it. I'll just watch it this way with Cassie
