Act 56
Mel
Mel had no time to process the whole spiel, because immediately after they parted, a cluster of onlookers clustered around them. Thankfully, they were providing them a distraction, too.
Why did you leave heeeeer Melchiooorrr, you silk-gloved anus gourmand! We haven’t seen Bea in ages! Lusje complained while Mel performed a card trick for their new little audience.
She’s clearly just here for you, because she’s madly in love!
Unable to answer, Mel just rolled their eyes and hoped that Lusje would stop talking.
I want to get to know her better, and see what other dirty words she makes you say.
“Now, remember the cards you just pulled and put them between your hands, like you’re praying,” Mel instructed their spectators, a little louder than needed, to hopefully make the demon shut up.
And she got even more ripped, did ya see? She could strangle you with one hand I bet, hehehe
“I will now pull the cards directly out of your hands. Just make sure that you don’t open the hands, even when you feel something cold.”
Finally Lusje shut up.
Mel let their fingers slide into their breast pocket. “Ready?”
The people holding the cards between their hands agreed enthusiastically. Upon seeing their nods, Mel pulled out the first card from the pocket, right out from between the palms of a man standing two arm lengths away.
Mary. She’s here!
Mel grew stiff. What?
I can sense her! She’s at the entrance!
“Here is your card,” Mel announced unceremoniously, handing the man the same card he was just holding. When he opened his hands to grab it, no card was left in his hand. The crowd gasped and applauded. “Please excuse me, ladies. Gentlemen,” Mel enclosed offhandedly while tipping the seam of their hat, leaving the other participants puzzled with their unfinished card tricks in their hands.
At a smart pace, almost running, they rushed back up a couple of stairs, right to the hallway in front of the entrance.
There, they saw her. It really was her.
Her sight was one to behold in all cases, but this time, she really took Mel’s breath away.
She was wearing a gala gown fitting to the grand location, caressing her body in shape and hair as if it was made just for her to wear. Her dress, with all its sparkling adornments and its color, reminded Mel of sparkling wine. The broad silken straps fell down her shoulders, revealing them and her neck in a luscious manner. The top part hugged her curvy body tightly, while the bottom part cascaded down in long, glittery waves. Her hair wasn’t braided or put back as usually, but alluringly pinned to one side, flowing down her chest in dancing rose golden waves, catching all the warm reflections of every single illumination source in the hall in between them.
Ave Maria, gratia plena, dominus tecum, Lusje prayed in pure awe, this way being one step ahead of Mel, who was absolutely unable to do anything but stare.
They felt like a small boy who just experienced attraction for the first time, unable to cope with these new feelings and to actually grasp what was happening to them.
That’s your girlfriend, Melchior, that woman is your girlfriend! Lusje rejoiced.
When Mary saw them, a happy, but shy smile spread over her face. It was of such familiar, comforting sweetness, that it helped Mel to free themself from the rigor.
They both hurriedly got under way, meeting in the middle of their distance, where Mel took off their hat, bent down, and kissed Mary’s hand, to hopefully convey at least a part of all the feelings of admiration and marvel she had unleashed within them.
Mary gasped softly, followed by a shy chuckle, then silently said: “Please, Mel, everyone is looking at us…”
“How could they not?” Mel answered while raising again, “You are a piece of art.”
Mary gave them a polite smile, but her reserved reaction made it clear that she felt a little uncomfortable.
“I’m sorry, my little dove. Was it too much?”
She shook her head.
“No. Normally I would love being greeted like this, but I am… not used to being looked at like you are. I don’t like being the center of attention. I - ah…” she paused, her face suddenly looking heavy-hearted. “I’m so sorry. I shouldn’t have come. I haven’t thought this through, I don’t want to be a burden on your great evening --”
“Sh, my love,” Mel tried to comfort her, guiding her hand under their arm with gentle force and leading her away from the focus of the hall and into a more secluded corridor. “Please don’t give it another thought. You aren’t a burden; this event is. You’re everything I look forward to.”
Their little dove grabbed their arm a little tighter, leaning her head against Mel’s shoulder.
“Forgive me for my pompous reception. I haven’t thought it through, either. I was just so struck by your sight and surprise visit, my beloved Rozemarijntje.”
She chuckled again. This time, it sounded more relaxed.
“You are forgiven. I will stay, but only if we can keep the focus on me to a bare minimum.”
“I’d love to agree, but that will be a hard task, with you looking like a falling star.”
Mary hit them playfully on the arm. “Stop it. You’re exaggerating. I informed myself about this event, and I’m dressed within the acceptable framework. I even chose the most subtle color.”
“Unfortunately, this color enhances everything about you and makes you shine like the evening star.”
Mary hit them again.
“Okay, okay, understood. You look stunningly average today, my dear. So, to what do I owe the honor of this visit?”
“I’ve managed to persuade my dad not to attend his event. It took me almost the whole day, that’s why I sadly couldn’t see your show and arrived late, but he eventually gave in when I told him that I’d meet the Magician he gifted me the tickets for, a couple of weeks ago.”
“Oh…? Doesn’t your father know that we … I mean…”
Mary went silent.
Mel understood immediately. “Excuse me, I didn’t want to pry. It is not my affair, only yours.”
The young woman shook her head. “I’m just ashamed for hiding you like this. I’d like to talk about you with him for days, but I know I need to take things slow. I’m changing so much lately.”
“You are a kind soul, my love.”
Mary coughed a little uncomfortably. “Enough of that... I need you to explain something to me, now.”
Mel froze. “Yes…?”
Walking past them so that she could face her opposite, Mary said: “How did you bring me to the car yesterday?”
Mel laughed, relieved.
“Oh no, don’t come at me with that ‘A magician never reveals their tricks’ baloney. You must’ve carried me. And even though you’re tall and not the weakest person, I probably weigh twice as much as you. How did you do it?”
“A magician never -”
“No!”
Mel laughed.
“My dear Marietje, it is rather simple. You’re not as heavy as you think, and I am stronger than I look.”
“Please, Mel, I’m just afraid that … you know. That you’ve hurt yourself while carrying me.”
She seemed honestly concerned and also a little ashamed. Mel thought for a moment, then, after looking around to confirm that they were unobserved, pulled her a little closer, making her cheeks flush red.
“What are you—”
“I’m showing you something to ease your mind,” they assured her while bending their knees to face Mary at her eye level, “and I’ll be doing it discreetly, promise. Lay your arms around my neck.”
Reluctantly, while scanning her surroundings to check for unwanted looks, too, Mary did as told.
“Hold tight.”
With this, Mel went even lower, hugged Rosemary’s thighs, and then stood up fully again, lifting Mary up in the process without any effort. In shock, the girl squeaked softly and held onto Mel’s neck.
Dangerous, bub. Should you really show her this?
“All good, see?”
“You’ll get yourself a hernia, Mel!”
She seemed to speak from experience. That would explain her particular concern.
“Or I’ll hurt your - I … I worsen your condition. Or—”
“Love, look at me. Do I look like I’m straining myself?”
She looked at Mel and faltered. With her pretty, mysterious face, the stars of freckles, soft spoken blushing lips and the two colored eyes that offered an endless supply of curiosity and warmth, Mel could feel themself becoming nervous and tempted to kiss her.
“You are a good actor,” Mary replied brazenly.
“That … that is true. But I wouldn’t lie to you in this matter. See, do I have even one drop of sweat on my forehead?”
Mary hesitated again.
“You’re red.”
“That’s only because you’re close, I assure you.”
Their words made Mary take on a darker shade of red, too.
“Okay, okay, I believe you for now, please let me down again.”
Mel did her bidding and gently set her down. Having her feet on the ground again, she nervously padded the few wrinkles out of Mel’s suit. “You … you can prove it to me properly when we’re alone.”
“As you wish, my little dove.”
“For now … let’s finally attend your event, okay…?”
Mel agreed with a nod, offered their arm again, and guided their girlfriend back to the fray.

When Lusje was saying the 'Ave Maria', I was imagining in my mind her singing that as the camera shows Mary and how beautiful she looks in her dress, and then the camera points back to Mel and Lusje so you see that Lusje is the one singing. 🤣 The light bickering between Mary and Mel was really adorable and kinda funny. It made me almost feel like they're already married. 🥹 And now I'm *really* curious about Mary's dad! Why does Mary not feel comfortable with telling her dad about her new girlfriend? 👀 Does she think he won't handle the news well for some reason?🤔
