Dev Update (05/02/2024)

Hi!

Here's a quick update and plan for that next dev build.

I'm currently testing all those new weapons + music instruments that had been added last week. In order to make these fully game-ready they need still some inventory icons and audio files to be added.

On top of this, I'm planning to get ragdolls done this week so the AI death event and ability to loot the body is on the to-do list as well.

Then there's one extra thing. Last weekend I went back to some games that are visually part of inspiration for Road to Vostok. I played a bit of Stalker Anomaly and few other games and I came to the conclusion that RtV's visual style and lighting is not on par what "base mood" I'm trying to implement for this Public Demo 2.

I think the current visuals are a bit too colorful, bright and don't provide that "dark" feeling that I would like to have. There's already bunch of plans for visual improvements after the Public Demo 2 when I have time to upgrade assets and really focus on the visuals, but I think I could probably still test some different lighting styles before that.

So here's the plan for the next upcoming dev build which is going to be this week.

I want to have these following elements ready for testing:
- Shelter (Attic) + Save system
- New weapons + animations (Glock, MK-18, VSS)
- Musical instruments + animations (Guitar, Harmonica)
- AI Death event + ragdolls
- Campfires + Positional lights
- Wind shaders
- Experimental base lighting (darker mood)

I think this will be a nice set of new stuff to be tested with this upcoming dev build and I'm pretty confident that I can get all these fully game-ready this week.

Once I have that dev build ready then I will be making a new devlog called "Map Rebuilds" and cover the development progress from Public Demo 1 v3 to this point and some details related to Public Demo 2 timeline. I'm planning to get this devlog out on Sunday.

I understand what you mean, it wasn't meant as if you were taking over everything from your inspirations. I just wanted to say that I think RtV is perfect the way it looks visually right now. Since I've been following the project (which is a long time) your decisions have always turned out to be the right ones. And I think you'll convince me this time too.

Yea this isn't related to overall visual style and assets, just lighting, contrast and certain colors :)

Worst thing you could do is to visit Stalker and think "damn my Game doesn't come close to this Style" .... Stalker is Stalker and RtV is RtV. I know that Stalker was the Number#1 inspiration but it doesn't have to be the same. I really like how RtV looks like at this moment. Edit: You can try it absolutely. I just think that RtV should have his own charm.

I’m excited to see what direction you take the game colors!

Thanks for response man, completely agree its important to play other games whilst developing. I dread to think how many hours played I've got altogether with Anomaly/Gamma and DayZ, got to be in the thousands at this point.

I played bunch of stuff since every now and then it's really important that developers also actually play stuff since it's so easy to become blind at your own product if you're always just developing stuff but not playing. Some games that I played were: - Stalker Anomaly - Stalker Gamma - Few Arma mods - DayZ

Road to Vostok

Just out of curiosity, what other games did you play this week for visual inspiration? Looking forward to testing the next build.

Yea the colorful is not probably the right word maybe it's more about feeling a bit more post-apocalyptic so more contrast and darker tones. But we will see how this experimental lighting test goes, if it turns out worse then we just go back to current one :)

Road to Vostok

I wouldn't flag this game as "colorful" atm, but will be interesting to see where you want to go :)
