Main Concept (WIP Feedback)

Hi!

I wanted to ask your opinion on this topic since this website overhaul includes new concept art and visual elements.

This topic is also highly related to visibility in Steam and other places which uses small format preview thumbnails which should stand out positively.

Here's a comparison between the old and the potential new graphical assets which are still work-in-progress though.

The most valid feedback in this case would be which one seems more compelling, which one raises more visual interest and if you were scrolling some images which one more likely would grab your attention.

Those cropped comparison are in aspect ratios what you would see in Steam listings etc.

Feel free to give your honest opinion, no wrong answers here :)

I prefer the second picture in every way. It makes the expectation of opening the game something dark and gritty, suggests a level of difficulty you'd look forward to. Not saying pic one isn't great, but the vibes are entirely different. One has more of a open world hunting vibe, while two matches Stalker vibes more. Of course, you're making an original game, not a clone, so whichever of these two feelings matches your vision of the world more would be the most "accurate" portrayal to any prospective audience.

Dustin Lester

Second one definitely feels more visually appealing to me. More to look at and more visual story telling, why's a helo down, what light is that up ahead, is it a fire? Is it man-made and someone is there to ambush me? Are there people in the trees that will jump out? Is this crossing worth it or is it certain death? That kind of storytelling is my favorite.

Skilletfan93

I like them both and either would grab my attention if I was scrolling through steam and saw them, but I personally prefer the original one, the new one makes Tarkov immediately spring to mind whereas the original one I more associate with DayZ. (Not that I have anything against Tarkov, I've been playing the single player and coop mods quite abit recently.)

Sam Hardwater

That new one looks great!

Cryst Vybz

Even if the new one look really great i prefer the old one. The new one is good but has this « deja vu » style and will not get my attention if i was scrolling through a list of game on steam.

Shamnolya

I like the new one. it's very better then old ones

luca ulivieri

I like the first one. The new one is cool, but also brings some X-Files vibes...

I like both the first one has a better atmosphere but it doesn't tell you much about the world of RTV The second one is a bit colorful but it tells you about how you are in a post-apocalyptic world and it tells you that there risks and rewards I think the second it's the best one

Jtk17

I prefer the 2nd one with the red tone, I instinctively look at this image first and in detail. I think this one translate more effectively the content of the game, be alone but with enemies, it's not a post apo, it's during the local apocalypse

Justin

In my opinion, the new artwork significantly enhances player interest compared to the old one. The depiction of the crashed helicopter, antennas, and urban blocks in the background, along with the color palette, effectively conveys a sense of threat. The oil painting style elevates the overall visual appeal. The increased contrast grabs attention more effectively than the old, somewhat monotonous image. In my opinion, the character's pose in the new artwork better conveys the dangerous nature of the zone, like he would know the danger. The improved equipment also shifts the character from appearing like a hunter to embodying the peril in Vostok. The portrayal makes it clearer that the gameplay extends beyond a simple forest setting, adding intriguing elements to draw attention.

hi anti, first of all: congratulations for all this work, I really don't feel like I'm throwing away patreon money ;) for the artwork, it all depends on the kind of atmosphere you visualize for this project, the original artwork makes me feel DAYZ, while the one on the right makes me feel ESCAPE FROM TARKOV. but I understood that you were inspired by both. I think the final choice really depends on the vibe you want to instill. can't wait for the v2 public demo!

michel

Personally I prefer the dark mysterious forest in the background, instead of Soviet style apartment buildings. The former intrigues me: „What will I encounter there?“ The latter makes me sigh and say „more goddamn Scavs?“.

I prefer the lighter design of the old one, because not every day is going to be dark and bleak. There is an overcast beauty to the environment that builds tension and anticipation, which mirrors what I've experienced in the demos so far. The clearer stop sign is foreboding and the empty space draw me towards the woods in the background. I like that the character and his rifle are less kitted out because it implies survival and gear improvement to me. The color contrast in the new one is very eye-catching though, especially for the thumbnail. The downed helicopter more heavily implies the post-apocalyptic feel. The pylons in the background focus my attention to the center. The darker, angled stop sign doesn't really grab my attention. I'm not sure if it's an explosion or something else causing the light. I like the title at the top of the thumbnail in the new one. Overall, I prefer the old one in tone and the new one in attractiveness.

Kevin Kirkbride

New one is an improvement, but I do like the posture of the character from the first scene. The presence of the helicopter so close raises questions. It signals collapse of authority / society -- but it pulled my attention without being key to the story - as far as I know. The character is more geared in the 2nd one - not sure how much survival is to play a role, but if it is important, then having cool stuff is a luxury and the first image is a better fit.

As others have said, the 2nd one is more visually striking and beautiful in its own right, but there's also value in the minimal "this area looks peaceful yet the STOP sign and foggy treeline implies treachery" vibe from the 1st art. I think there could be a really nice sweet spot between the two of them.

I like the new one myself, it has a tone that gives it a more seriousness - we mean business. The old one makes think on hunting. I do think that the new one will catch more attention to those that don't know this project/game from before! And can spark a new interest from those that have forgotten about it!

I like the new art better. It has a good color pallet, and looks more mysterious. See everything in the background has intrigued me, and I want to go explore. The old art is great and unique. I also associate it with RtV, so at a glance I know what game it is. Maybe a refurbished version would be cool. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Love it, makes it look a bit more grim

MartianV2

Second stands out more. However, I like the original artwork a lot- it feels more representative of the game's atmosphere and I like that it's more subtle, personally. The bottom one to me seems more generic but I think it would grab more attention on steam.

RemoveTuba

I think at first glance I prefer the new one, as it looks more dramatic and STALKER-ish and is just a better composition overall. The old one has its charm and merits, though, and also seems a little more grounded if that is important

Dani

I feel like the new concept-art reminds me of stalker..which can be good and bad at the same time I think. The old concept art feels more unique to me and I have it associated with RtV very deeply by now. I still like the new one but I feel like the old one is just more fitting, I especially like the forest line there.

Feruen

Old one is better imo, tho it would still need some work. Second one has this ,,hero" element to with bright welcoming background which kinda lessens the danger and threat.

Rottmeister

PS: But the pose of the character in the new Version looks a bit better to me ;)

Marcoon1305

(pushed wrong button) The new one looks awesome from the artistic view, but on the other hand i would expect something more like a STALKER game with anomalies, mutants and such... It says more "Something (bad) happened here". While, as already said, the old one looks more mysterious and makes me want to discover the forbidden area more, than something that already screams "Here's the party!"

Marcoon1305

Agreed. Nothing to add.

Kevin Emley

I prefer the old one. Mainly because the STOP sign is really an eyecatcher and it seems more like a "Why is this a no-go area, while everything looks peaceful?"

Overall I like the new concept better. It's more ominous. I especially like the blown-out helicopter. That makes it clear visually that something very bad has happened in this world. I'm no artist but one element I'd miss from the 1st version is the full-on STOP sign. In the 2nd version the sign is there, but angled away and not as easy to read at a glance. Especially in that bottom image where the helicopter is mostly out of frame, it'd help to convey the seriousness of this guy's predicament.

Anthony Bucci

I think the contrast and colors in the new one are more compelling, but I like the scene of the first one a bit better. On the whole I'd probably be more likely to click through on the new one.

t3hsquirr3l

Honestly, I wasn't really fond of the original, I do like the trees in the background and the warning sign though. This new one definitely captures my attention more than the original, especially the downed helicopter and light at the end of the road. Plus I like the orange hue in the middle adds just enough color too the image. Overall, great overhaul!

PagingDrLamp

I mean I personally like the old one better since it conveys the bleak setting perfectly. But for the sake of visibility on steam the new one is clearly superior due to its dramatic contrast and vibrant colours.

Hey, I really like the fog and the angle from the original. I feel like when I see the original the character feels small in a big unknown world. The new art style is good and I like its style compared to the original, however I personally prefer the original given the feeling it brings to me. Hope this helps!

Trinitive HD

Definitely prefer the newest cover. Looks and feels more apocalyptic. The crashed heli was also an amazing addition

Infinity

Honestly, both concept art are hard to put down. The old art has a dark impression overall. On the other hand, the new art feels like it draws you into the game, giving you an idea of what kind of place Vostok's area is...hope or chaos. Personally, I feel that the darkness of the old art suits this game.

For me, not even a question that the new concept is more attention grabbing and intriguing than the old one. 100% prefer new.
