Armor System (Preview)

Hi!

Here's a small preview clip about the armor system.

Here's what has been implement so far:

The initial system is now mostly working, but there's still bunch of edge cases, sound effects and additional details that need to implemented. I'm also going to make some model / texture variations for each plate type.

There's also some considerations for ballistic helmets, but to be honest I'm not yet fully sure how those should be implemented in terms of "easy to understand" UI elements. One method could be that I add new medical condition called Headshot which would act similarly like the Rupture and ballistic helmets would prevent that etc.

I think that helmet topic overnight and I will let you know within few days what I decided with those :)

Well, Antti said that when the plates are shot. Seemed like it was clarified on the new post as well. No worries.

Hi! I added few clarifications related to this (new post) and I think there was a slight miscommunication on my part since I was only showing things that are implement so far. The old dev plans are still the same, no limitations or vision changes :) Yes the tetris will come back eventually, since that's the preferred grid method for me personally but this current method is so easy to manage codewise, so I decided to use this to increase development speed and then revert that tetris style back later on. I learn some important lessons from that Unity build and for example that tetris inventory was easily the most complicated and bug-prone feature there, so it's much more smart to implement the core features this way that I'm currently doing.

Armor is a touchy subject in hardcore shooters, hard to please everyone's preference. I get the feeling that this system is a bit "call of duty esque" like Sav said, where shots to the legs for example are also blocked by armor? All I can say is that as long as there won't be a moment where I put a .308 into someone's chin from 50 yards or under without incapacitating them immediately because they've got the buffest gucci helmet on (cough tarkov cough), I'll likely be happy, but I wish that this feature isn't rushed or excessively dumbed down for the sake of accessibility.

The biggest Problem i have with that is that it seems like that a shot (doesn't matter if the Enemy hit the Head or a Leg) gets protected by an Armor Plate that should only protect the Chest. Maybe i missunderstand that, but for me it sounds like that, and something like this has nothing to do with "gameifying" it's simply unrealistic. If Plates only protect the Chest Area, it shouldn't be hard to add Helmets. (Edit: And i'm still thinking that a Headshot should be an Instant Kill without an Helmet) Right now it seems like .... you get hit, and the Plates protect you. Thats all. There is no Hit Calculation behind that. It's Warzone, and that's not what i imagine for the Game. ´ Also i don't understand Antti's Sentence "There shouldn't be a need for Wikis" ... Hardcore Shooters and their Community living from User made Content and Guides. The Direction right now sounds like "Protect the Snowflakes" doesn't matter what i told you a Year ago. As said, i can totally missunderstand that so i'm still waiting for Antti's answer. (I'm not just making a Shooter Game, People will see)

I've heard from many sources, usually discussing ballistic armor for civilian use, that rifle plates are best thought of as things to keep you alive long enough to get med-evac'd. They don't make you walking tanks, they just prevent instant incapacitation. I think the way you're implementing armor is good, although lvl.II(soft armor) might take more rounds in real life(and help balance it with hard armor).

I really like the direction the armor system is heading at. No point doing any angled shots damage debuff or such, at least as of yet. What comes to helmets, I think they should work similarly, but just lose their integrity at 2 or max 3 shots and be straight up broken and worthless / just for cosmetic or even charisma value after. Hits to helmet could cause tunnel vision or concussion.

I would suggest some randomized values to these plates. So a hit to the plate with the corresponding caliber could take somewhat like 15% to 35% random damage so it's more like a guess game when the plate finally gives in.

hey Antti, i'm a little bit confused about your sentence "easy to understand". It's almost like you took a 180 degree turn in terms of mechanics after reading some of those "i'm too lazy to read the tutorial" questions on Steam. I don't really think that you need a tarkov like deepness to everything, but realism in terms of ... Plates for the chest, helmet to protect the head should be a no-brainer even for the not so smart players. The whole Armor System right now seems a lot more call of duty style then everything else. Not that i want to change your development plan but i wonder what happend to the old dev plans for the Game. Is it really you deciding those things or User Feedback and a mix of Godot Hurdles? PS: Do we get back the Tetris Inventory at some Point? stil amazing work, Sav

Wow it looks socool looking forvard to this

MrUlfen

Dude you are COOKING this game up to perfection! I can see already this is going to be my favorite game of all time. In all honesty I have not enjoy a game as much as I have RTV.

securityCase

Cool! I appreciate the gamification! I think some games take the tenet of realism too far which ends up affecting gameplay, but I guess it depends on preference. Excited to see the system in action :)

Dani

The ratings are actually totally realistic and linked to right type of weapon calibers, of course there's few "gamified" element in this so it's easy to understand. Yea the military faction will often use plates and especially some faction bosses once they are implemented :)

Road to Vostok

Even though it’s not realistic, I think it’s way better this way for balancing purposes and I really like it! I’m guessing higher level AI will also have plates? I know looting dead AI is just accessing a randomized container for now and not their armor or equipped weapons and stuff, but I mean eventually
