Dev Build #1 - Inventory Tetris v2

Hi!

Here's an updated version.

____________________

Changelog

Fixed: Item highlight started flickering, when you tried to place item [LMB] on top of with multiple items.

Fixed: If you tried to fast transfer [CTRL+LMB] already rotated item and there wasn't enought space, the rotated item flipped 90-degrees and item got stuck in some case.

Added: Fast transfer [CTRL+LMB] supports now automatical rotation detection if there's enough vertical space on the grid.

Added: Fast transfer [CTRL+LMB] supports now instant transfer if you hold down [LMB] and you want to transfer multiple items without clicking.

Added: Item Drop [SHIFT+LMB] supports now instant drop if you hold down [LMB] and you want to drop multiple items without clicking.

Removed: Debug grid transfer error audio. With instant transfers and support for automatic rotation detection, it's visually obvious if the grid doesn't have enought room.

Feedback topic

Do you think those instant transfers will make the looting experience "too fast"?

One option is that this instant transfer could be an end-game skill reward, meaning it's only available when you have skilled your dexterity or some other stat to the max or it could be tied to some extremely rare backpack or equipment which gives you this "organization power".

Let me know what you think.

i agree with the loot grab idea, I found myself very frustrated with the click drag click even though its simple, the click drag let go just feels normal

Gotfly

I think I like this idea the most. Tarkov makes it so your search speed (time to look through a container and identify items) is tied to a skill that levels by you searching stuff. I think it's well within the realm of immersion to say that as your character gets to be more experienced at searching and identifying containers because he's done it so many times that he's "experienced" in it.

Doctor Bananas

I think the frustration of getting killed in the middle of something can be easily circumvented if cancelling actions is implemented.

Fonzi

Immersion is nice sometimes but not everything has to be immersive. Once you get going into a totally immersive experience it takes away from some of the gameplay when more than half of it is waiting for inventory items to transfer into your inventory. This is offset a little bit in Zomboid because of the quicker looting perk you can give yourself at the start of the game. But in RTV I'd rather quick loot and get back to the core gameplay loop of travel >> tactically kill enemies >> loot enemies >> travel.

Evelyn Blackwood

Regarding quick looting - I personally really like the way Zomboid handles looting. Containers and items open and show instantly but transferring an item to your bag takes time. The time to transfer depends on the weight and size of the item. So a pack of cigarettes will be lootable almost instantly but a large gas canister would take a few seconds. And the looting can be stopped just by stepping away from the container (or pressing escape I think). I mean it's a different kind of game but maybe there are some things that are adaptable to an fps. So the option just to click without moving the mouse to your inventory is good, but for me it takes away some of the immersion when transferring items happens instantly. Oh and I think it would be great if you just could click on an item, hold the mouse button, move the item and when you release the mouse button the items drop on the position your item is at the time of releasing the mouse button.

pgml

I really appreciate the quick looting actually! Altho taking time to loot would make the game far more realistic and grounded, I think there needs to be a sense of balance struck here. Quick looting keeps the game feeling tight, smooth, and faster paced. You can methodically look at equipment all you like but if you're balls deep in a firefight and need to get out with what loot you can, you'll want it all fast. Nothing beats getting killed in the middle of an eating, drinking, weapon equipping, etc. mod animation while you're sitting around waiting for it to finish. Gameplay above all encompassing immersion, imho.

Evelyn Blackwood

I think the loot speed is fine as far as the quick loot thing, i definitely think that there should be some kind of delay as far as either searching or transferring. there is certainly a middle ground to be struck here. I like the idea of like a rust type system but with the added time of needing to search the container, or even searching a container for specific items and coming back to the container later to clear the rest of it out. But there is also the thought that in certain containers in real life you can open them and immediately know what is in said container. so like i said, certainly a balance to be struck.

PurpleSeaUrchen

Thinking of Stalker Mods as well, There is one mod called "takes time to loot" and it loads items in at different rates and that delay rewards partial looting in certain scenarios over either the "search and wait" of Tarkov, or the quickness of a BR looting system. You can choose to be like, oh i need food, or a bandage and not bother looking at the rest of the stash, because it would take too long to search

My favorite game is STALKER Loast Alpha DC extended. It's have many many ways for grind and etc. Always need to mess around loot. And ver 2 for this way is good! it saves time :) But in my little challenge in demo I scavengered cans. And pile of rubbish and cupboards near road was every time nerves place for me couse I messed around on open area and risk to grab maslina (and I grabed some times :) ) So, IMHO: looting in save base could be better with fast interaction. Looting in combat areas could be better with *not so fast* looting :) I really like control in RTV. I feel character movement. I like how to start super sprint, it's like slip and acceleration. I like rotation of camera wit mouse. (now I even feel uncomfortable playing stalker) And I think "not so fat" looting it's part of this control/moving in RTV. More surviving experience, imho

Hey there, i feel like the fast Looting is fine. I would slow it down (as i said in the feedback form) by simulating the time it would need to search throught the container. So you always have to wait 1-2 Seconds till you see item after item. If this is too hard to code, or people don't want to wait that long there should be atleast a timer of 1 or 2 seconds for opening the container itself. In Both cases only if you don't know whats inside ofcourse. So only for Containers with newly generated Loot.

SavRoyale

Hi Antti, Love it. Only thing i had problems with was the Keys for "fast Drag between inventory and Container" and "Drop Item" Think those 2 needs to be switched. So Shift for "fast Drag" and "CTRL" for "Drop Item"?! Ofcourse if we can change those Keys by ourself in the future it isn't a Problem at all. Click and Drag was fine for me, Rotating was smooth. Overall it feels way better.

SavRoyale

I personally found the fast loot mechanic excellent. I like the speed. I'm an EFT player and this feels perfect to me. I needed to unforget drag and drop, but the click and drop allows better scrolling I think

McGarnacle

As a side note, I used the random item spawner to drop a super massive amount of items in a pile in front of me (200 to 400 items) and my framerate barely decreased. Awesome stuff :)

Fonzi

This is a good take. The suspense/fear of looting is super important indeed. Tarkov managed to do that really well for me with the "searching container, identifying items" process but I don't know if Antti wants to go that route or not, and I don't know if it would be a good fit for the game in the first place. It's like you say, there are lots of ways to balance this :)

Fonzi

I like the fast transfer. But it's way to fast for looting new containers. It's a balance issue I think. Could be postponed for an later update or there could be introduced a new system that delays the looting of new containers. If you're looting in a house there should be suspense and fear of being discovered by an NPC. A fake searching timer could possibly work. It's very nice for organizing your own stash. But could still have a few hundredth millisec delay if you "own" the container. i think there needs to be a separation between containers you "own" and containers that are new and have never been searched. How long does it take a person to separate the useful from thrash in a drawer they have never opened? I Think there are lots of ways to balance this. But the machanic in it self is good.

Iluvatar

If you think it's too fast, I think adding a "time cooldown" to item transfer like in Zomboid would be an ideal compromise. But I think you could absolutely have a mechanic or skill where as your dex/whatever improves, loot transfer becomes faster, kinda like how Tarkov will increase your loot search speed as you level up your looting skill.

Fonzi

Well, yes, it's too fast, it should be similar to Project Zomboid, where big items take longer to transfer than little ones. About the instant transfer skill, I'm not sure about that one. Maybe could be specified by the container, I'm not good at explaining myself in English, but, for example, you have a little cabinet and a big wooden chest. You need to store your biggest gun, so, in the chest, you just could drop it on the chest quickly, almost instantly, but in the cabinet, with smaller doors, it could be more complicated because you have less "entry space".

Dario Gonzalez

Yes ah man I really enjoy the idea of it being end game related as a skill or a reward of progression! Very curious what folks will be feeling about this, but I think if put forth as a progression few would deny that :D

Tenebris Infinite

I think there's a good point here, let's see what others think. One option is that this instant transfer could be an end-game skill reward, meaning it's only available when you have skilled your dexterity or some other stat to the max or it could be tied to some extremely rare backpack or equipment which gives you this "organization power".

Road to Vostok

I do feel it makes things too fast myself personally, i feel looting should be a more methodical process in RTV, same for dumping items as well. The item orientation though, my dude, very thankful for that one!

Tenebris Infinite

Dude you work like lightspeed! Awesome will chime in back here with my feedback in just a few :D
