Character Preview System (WIP)

Hi!

Just quickly wanted to share that I'm making a first iteration of the character preview system which is based on 2D-sprites and layering.

The reason why I'm making this visualization system is because, I think games like these should provide possibility to give some personality to your character and even though this system is in 2D-format, I think this approach is enough to provide that "this is my character" feeling when you're looting and equipping gear and clothes.

The equipment slots that will be linked to this visualization system are:
- Head
- Torso
- Rigs
- Backpack
- Legs
- Feet
- Hands

You can test this system at the end of the month with next Patreon exclusive Dev Build.

Love the 2D visuals. Really gives an old school visual vibe which fits perfectly with the non-hdr materials and photo textures.

The openness Antti shares with us for each feature choices is rare to see from a developer these days and that is why I have supported this project from day one. Seeing RTV progressing like it is and seeing the effort being put in to is encouraging and exciting.

I love that you give your reasoning behind each feature choice. You do a great job at addressing tradeoffs that benefit the whole of the game

Serenity From the Soul

I think the 2d sprites will work great and not add any extra work for the system as well.

Of course 3d sprites in inventory will look more expressive, but first standing point is "more effective".

Games like stalker prove that 2d sprites work more than well enough for the "this is my character" feeling, when combined with arm and leg rigs itll be great. This also gives community modders the chance to make some awesome hd inventory mods in the future too :D

Tenebris Infinite

I think this works well and is efficient for now. This is a solo experience with no 3rd person (maybe that will change) so a 2D representation is plenty as no real people will see the character.

Adam Topliss

I personally like the paper doll approach to displaying gear - I think my only gripe is when the paper doll looks "lazy". I feel like since it's a much more simple style, you have to make sure that the sprites and the art style feel like they are a good stand-in for a 3D model

Doctor Bananas

I love this. It allows for way more focus on actual game mechanics which will lead to a better experience overall. Keep up the great work!

I agree, the only 3D-effect will be linked to hand models, so they will change related to your jackets and gloves etc. But other than that this 2D-approach will save huge amount of time compared to 3D.

Road to Vostok

I think that system is plenty. No need for a complicated 3D model
