Dev Build #2 - Equipment System

Hi!

Here's the new development build for you to test.

BUILD DOWNLOAD (1,07Gb)

Note: When your downloading development builds, always download the whole file structure. Do not move or download individual files/folders.

Disclaimer: You can share, record and publish content from this development build, but do not share files or download links outside from Patreon.

Equipment Slots (Equip)

You can drag items to dedicated equipment slots. Slots are directly linked to item types.

Equipment Slots (Unequip)

You can drag items from equipment slots, this unequips the item and allows you to place it back to the inventory.

Equipment Slots (Swap)

If there's a item already in equipment slot, you can swap that equipment by dragging a new item to that slot.

When item gets swapped, the system automatically checks if there's space for item, both in horizontal and vertical space. If there is space, item will be placed directly to inventory. However if there isn't available space for swappable item, the item gets automatically dropped.

Equipment Slot (Drop)

You can drop items directly from the equipment slot using SHIFT + L.MOUSE

Slot Highlight Check

You can hover items on top of the visual character model, if there's an equipment slot for the item, the slot gets highlighted

Fast Equip

You can drop items on top of the visual character model, if there's an equipment slot for the item, the item gets equipped

Character Preview

When you equip/unqeuip items and if the item is linked to character appearance, the visual character model updates.

The system uses 2D-sprite layers and assings the order of clothing and gear automatically.

Weapon UI Activations

If you have an active primary or secondary weapon on your hand and you unequip the weapon from the equipment, the weapon will be automatically lowered and deactivated.

If you swap an active primary or secondary weapon, the system automatically puts down + deactivates the previous weapon and raises + activates the new weapon.

Equipment HUD Slots

The left column of equipment slots are also shown in the gameplay HUD, when you close the UI.

The HUD Slots updates automatically if you equip/unequip/drop items from your main UI equipment slots. You can show/hide the HUD with F2.

Pick-up Rotation Grid Space Check

Now if you pick-up item, the system automatically checks if there's space for rotated item.

UI Close Drop

If you're still dragging an item and you close the UI, the item gets dropped automatically

Unequip Grid Space Check

If you unequip an item, the the system automatically checks if there's space for item, both in horizontal and vertical space.

If there isn't free space on the inventory grid, the unequipped item get's automatically dropped.

Equipment Slot Hover Tooltip

Equipment slots now react to hover tooltip. If there's an item equipped in a slot, you can see the item stats using ALT hover tooltip toggle.

Optimization & Tweaks

The grid system performs now ~15% faster when theres high amount of items on the grid.

The background gaussian blur that comes up when the UI is open has been optimized.

The instant drop while holding down SHIFT + L.MOUSE has been removed, now it requires you to press L.MOUSE each time when you want to drop item (it was too fast)

The instant transfer while holding down CTRL + L.MOUSE has been removed, now it requires you to press L.MOUSE each time when you want to transfer item (it was too fast)

Upcoming Features

Character 3D-arm model and textures will be linked to the equipment system, so when you change clothing (Torso or Hands) it will visible also through character arms.

Different kind of items make unique sounds when equipped / unequipped.

Equipment will effect on inventory weight capacity.

I feel the same way

Arbiter_Numbers

Really nicely polished. The 2 things I would suggest are Hold left mouse function as opposed to the click to pick up and click to set down (so hold left mouse to pick up item and let go to set item in slot). And also maybe even a space on the left hand side to set stuff down on the ground to move things around in the inventory so that if your inventory is getting full you can organize more quickly and efficiently. ( so say the inventory is full but if reorganized you could make space for a couple more items, you could drag a couple items to the "ground" while still being able to pick that item back up to move it back to the inventory once you've organized better)

Okay, thank you very much Antti. It's so amazing to see how much you really care about the community, you fix reported bugs really quick and listen to the community. So happy to be supporting RtV.

There's something wrong with FOV settings save files, so it goes to FOV 0 = zooming to zero. Those save files are saved in the registry but I would not suggest trying to delete those unless your familiar working with the windows registry. I will upload a new build somewhere next week, so it will override those savefiles and fix your bug. The interesting questions is still, how those save files got corrupted, I have no idea what could cause that, but I will look into it.

Road to Vostok

Okay now there's this weird bug where the camera just keeps zooming and zooming and wont stop. This happens right after i spawn in to the game. I tried reinstalling but it seems like it's not working. [EDIT: It goes away when i change the fov]

I've just done about 5-10 minutes with it. First impressions are good. I noticed some UI inconsistencies. For example. You can left clik and drag in one motion an item from your inventory and click again on the slot/character model. This those not work from the item slot. In the item slot you must click then move the mouse. Perhaps activate on mouse click vs activate on mouse click release? I think it should be the same anywhere in the UI. Also on the item slot you can right click to pickup an item. This does not work in the backpack. Perhaps disable right click to pickup in the item slot. Improvement suggestion. The ability to click, move and equip an item with just 1 mouse click. Click mouse, hold and drag. Release. Item is equipped. Also, great stuff. Loving the ability to see the early test builds :)

From a quick session testing everything out, it all seems mechanically sound! Regarding the Weapon UI Activations, when I unequip a weapon that is drawn, it vanishes from my character's POV. I don't know if that's intentional as you said it "will be automatically lowered and deactivated", so if the gun is supposed to be visibly lowered and put away, that's not happening. Otherwise like I said, everything works and feels great!

Fonzi

No this is perfect. I didnt know this πŸ˜‚

SW Content

If this helps let me know, otherwise I have to implement some fix to this.

Road to Vostok

Are you kidding me? πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ nice thanks

You can change the preferred monitor by using regular windows hotkeys for that: Windows+Shift+Left or Right Arrow. This is how you change fullscreen applications between monitors, but in the future I will also introduce windowed mode etc.

Road to Vostok

can you put in the settings for monitor or windowed? The game start always at the wrong second monitor. chan't change in the game...

SW Content

Don't know if this intentional, but all of the weapon toggles also still work even if you're in menu (flashlight, laser).

Doctor Bananas

Will test this evening. Thanks

SW Content

I can already envision how these mechanics will fit in with the game's experience! Great job and I appreciate all your dedication to this genre.

Serenity From the Soul

That inventory system feels amazing! Great job Antti!

Bobi

Now this is a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon! Thank you for all the hard work you put together here Antti, gunna have my feedback in a video asap! :D

Tenebris Infinite

Thanks for the feedback. I actually forgot to fix that reload bug, but I'm fixing it now :) Also that mouse wheel bug was a good find, fixing that also now. Currently there will just one layer but this system is modular for multiple layers, so in the future that is a possibility.

Road to Vostok

Hi Antti, just downloaded the Build and messed around a little bit. The Models for the new Items are looking awesome. I only found one little thing: - If you are in Inventory you can lower / raise your Weapon. Mousewheel could be used for other things. - Also in Inventory, if you are not dragging an Item pressing R makes you Reload the Weapon. Both things shouldn't be possible while in Inventory. And 1 Question: Since Layering is an Option can we expect to see Multiple Layers of Clothes that you can wear at once? (T-Shirt, Pullover, Jacket) as an example?
