Dev Update (05/03/2023)
Added 2023-03-05 01:30:35 +0000 UTCHi!
A quick development update.
I'm currently polishing the terrain for the Public Demo 1 v2 patch and part of this process I'm tweaking some of the rendering features.
One key element of this updated Village map which is double the size of the Public Demo 1 is optimization. There is basically a decision to be made that do I want to keep the same level of detail and density for nature (trees, foliage etc.) and lose some frames or make the forest areas a little bit more scattered and keep about the same performance level like in Public Demo 1.
Currently I'm testing the map with RTX 3070Ti and I get around 120-160 fps in most places with 1440p resolution and Extreme Quality. I would assume that low-end GPU's like GTX 1060 will run around 60fps with this expanded map currently.
There's plenty of optimization tricks still available but unfortunately I don't have time to implement all those yet (related to the project roadmap), so the easiest/fastest way to optimize the map currently is to lower the nature density which helps the rendering.
I would assume that most of you have tested the Public Demo 1, so what do you think about the nature density, would you want to keep the same level of detail or would you want more frames with less density?
Unfortunately there can't be in-game options for these yet (meaning the player could choose the density), because AI-navigation is linked to this, so it can't be switch dynamically.

I feel like the foliage density is quite important to the ambience and experience. Perhaps tuning of LOD distances could help? You've probably already done that. I had no problems with the PD1 on a 2070Super. Frames aren't crazy important to me, so long as I can hit a minimum of 60fps. I want to say I was consistently hitting 120-130 with PD1.

2023-03-08 16:26:18 +0000 UTCI would prefer more dense foliage. My RX5700 XT is getting around 100fps maxed out. Before that I was running a R580 at medium settings and was still getting above 60fps most of the time, with occasional drops into 50fps + or - territory (like aiming down sight in a dense area while fighting AI). A single player game is very playable with those frames, and since this game will not be PvP, I see no reason to sacrifice the immersion for more frames.

2023-03-07 13:13:25 +0000 UTCI have a 3070 and have very good performance with settings on max (1080p). I like the density the way it is in the demo, i prefer if it could stay like this.

2023-03-05 19:42:04 +0000 UTCI second everything above. i5 and 2080 here and frames were no issue maxed out. The dense foilage definitely was one of the most unique features with how well it’s implemented. I think overall most people will be able to handle it. Can’t wait!

2023-03-05 09:17:21 +0000 UTC2060 Super on 1080p ran at 144 fps consistently on Standard quality. I would prefer keeping nature as dense as it is, I'm personally okay with the potential FPS hit especially if it can be mitigated later in the roadmap.

2023-03-05 05:27:06 +0000 UTChad 0 Problems with my Setup (RTX 2070). What i could watch from Comments on Steam and different YT Vids is that some People with lower Hardware had less Problems then People with good Hardware. (So a lot of People with an actual good Setup had some struggle, but i think that this is not your fault, it feels more like they have a Bottleneck somewhere) But Overall the Density was fine. Render Distance actually is not (atleast for me). Even on the small Patreon Dev Build Map Trees a little bit further away looked flat. Ähm not like an actual 3D Object. Long Story short: Instead of thinking about Density i would give Players the Option to raise the Distance Objects getting rendered nicely. If this is possibly ofc.

2023-03-05 02:39:20 +0000 UTCPretty good actually, graphics on Performance and Dual Scopes Rendering enabled, solid 60fps, occasionally hitting the 52 only on rapid camera movements

2023-03-05 02:08:55 +0000 UTCOut of curiosity, do you remember what kind frames you had in the demo?

2023-03-05 02:00:55 +0000 UTCI would be really sad if my gtx 970 can't keep up with the project haha

2023-03-05 01:57:04 +0000 UTCI personally would prefer it kept at the current level as a basis. And as development gets further along see whether it needs to be toned down. The current environment is good for immersion and as a single player game I personally prefer higher level of detail.

2023-03-05 01:37:22 +0000 UTCI think best course to optimize detail to frames is to go denser further away from points of interest, around houses a little thinner and as u get deeper it gets denser. Try to keep the details while also giving the sense forestry that enemy AI can hide in, a balance of encounter options. Looking forward to the update
