Dev Build - Ammo System (v1)

Here's a new development build for you to test.

1. When testing this dev build, start a new game in order to reset the save system.

2. When you're downloading dev builds, always download the whole file structure. Do not move or download individual files or folders.

3. You can share, record and publish content from this dev build, but do not share files or download links outside from Patreon.

Feedback: All feedback is important, but this dev build is designed for testing how the initial ammo system works.

Most valuable thing to test is the ammo system, so the goal is to try to find out if there's a way to break the system, meaning you lose ammo count or ammo boxes when some bug happens.

Ammo Requirement

Weapons now need ammo in order to fire them. Ammo is no longer unlimited, it's linked to the weapon system and ammo is gained by picking up compatible ammo boxes and reloading the weapon.

There will be bunch of different ammo types for specific weapon calibers, but this dev build only uses test ammo that is compatible for all weapons.

Ammo Stacking

When you loot ammo boxes they will appear in your inventory like normal items. Ammo item types support item stacking and you can stack ammo by manually dragging them on top of each other (green highlight) or by using auto-stack feature which can be found through context menu action [STACK]. Auto-stack option is only available once you have multiple same caliber ammo in your inventory.

If you decide to drop the ammo stack it will automatically split the stack and drop individual ammo boxes.

Ammo Splitting

Once you have stacked ammo, you can split them back to individual items through context menu action [SPLIT]. Splitting calculates the base cartridge amount value per ammo box and splits the ammo based on that which in this test scenario is x30.

Ammo Indicator + Count

Weapon UI is now updated and there's compatible ammo indicator and ammo count which are linked to the magazine slot. Ammo indicator (bullet icon) turns to green if you have compatible ammo in your inventory and ammo count highlights the current amount of ammo in your magazine.

Item Tooltip Update

Once you point ammo type items, the item tooltip shows the current amount of ammo per box on the top right corner of the tooltip (green value). This value changes dynamically if you use ammo from that specific box and you drop it back to the game world.

Save System Update

Save system now supports ammo elements and it saves the current amount of ammo on your weapon magazine, inventory (ammo boxes/stack) or individual placable ammo boxes (amount).

Optic Settings Update

Small detail but weapon UI now displays separate icons for rail movement (rail icon) and reticle brightness (brightness icon) if the optic + weapon supports that.

Weapon Stats (WIP)

Weapon UI now also shows Stats slot which will be linked to the weapon parameters and modded weapon stats.

Even though the slot is visible in this dev build, this feature is still disabled since there's other systems that need to be implement before this.

Upcoming features
- Ammo unload (Weapon UI)
- Stack max amount (Inventory)
- Small tweaks (Weapon UI)
- Unique ammo boxes (Different calibers)

Extra mention (Shotguns / Bolt-actions)

I removed shotguns and bolt-action weapons for this dev build since the reload mechanic needs to be implemented differently for weapons that don't have norma firing type or magazines. I will add those back to the game once the reload mechanic supports these weapons

While reloading: if you go to inventory and pick any item it get stuck in place at the moment reload is finished. You cannot move it but you still have that item in inventory; i.e. if ammo stack gets stuck you can use it for reload. I took a short clip ( https://youtu.be/ZwNUrgxEFjc ). Easy to reproduce with any item; i hope it's easy to fix too.

Sorry in advance for the wording of the text but my English is bad and I'm using the google translator. I found a bug, when you leave the primary weapon without ammunition and switch to the secondary it doesn't shoot, you have to reload it even if it has bullets, after after reloading the secondary you switch back to the primary and reload with no ammo in your inventory, the reload animation starts and stays in an infinite loop, you have to unequip and equip again to make it work again. For the error to occur, the secondary must not have a full charger

Bugs: - dropping stacked ammo box stacked from your inventory will kill you (Haven't been able to replicate this and might have been user error but could have been legit) - grabbed an ammo box with G, and looked straight up. Dropped the ammo box and it glitched about halfway into the player character model, hung in the air for a second before landing on the ground

Couldn't find any bugs in my bit of testing! One thing I've been wanting to bring up though, which I am positive you are aware of and will be ironed out but I wanted to bring up just in case - enemy gunshots are really hard to locate visually but even more importantly by sound. I rarely have any idea where I'm being shot from. Otherwise, I'm loving how the ammo system is shaping up :)

Dani

i also like how you added the ammo count to the weapon inspect

1 thing about the ammo splitting is that it would be nice if we could choose how much to split. like if i only want to put away some of my ammo like 50% of it i could split into to stacks of ammo instead of splitting all of it.

Jakob Arnold

Excellent stuff dude, zero problems with this build and the weapon pile continues to grow! :D

Tenebris Infinite

What a nice surprise. So happy you've decided to really double down on dev builds lately. Happy to try this system out!
