Godot Test Build (Experimental)
Added 2023-09-21 17:16:10 +0000 UTCHi!
As part of my behind-the-scenes preparations for the possible engine switch, I decided to set up a stress-test rendering scene in Godot (open-source engine) and already implemented bunch of Road to Vostok basic features in this experimental build.
I basically went full-force (2 days) of learning this Godot programming language called GDScript (basically Python) and I think I'm already really productive with this new language, so I added the following features:
- Movement
- Sprint
- Crouch
- Jump
- Leaning
- Headbob
- Weapon Handling
- Weapon Movement
- Aiming
- Recoil
- Day & Night cycle
- Flashlight
- Debug UI
Since I have now this experimental build mostly ready, I decided that I could share this with you and get some initial feedback related to Godot's performance and general feel.
This is really really barebones build since everything is made from scratch but I think it would cool idea to get your thoughts on this, even if I still would continue with using Unity.
I'm still waiting for Unity's news, they are really taking their time with the update, but I have spent this "waiting time" by making useful resources like this test build.
This build would basically also act as a base foundation for the actual engine switch if that would happen and if the destination would be Godot.
I will still improve few rendering things, this probably takes couple of days and then I'm ready to share this experimental build with you :)
ps. I will announce the plans for Public Demo 2 right after Unity news update comes out.

Yea, I'm just digesting this and listening some talks from Unity people.

2023-09-22 19:12:06 +0000 UTCHi Antti, Unity has made their announcement if you hadn't seen it. Broken trust aside, it looks better for everyone. https://blog.unity.com/news/open-letter-on-runtime-fee

2023-09-22 18:24:30 +0000 UTCYea, it's definitely quite rare to see the same product in two different engines and for me also this has been quite interesting comparison.

2023-09-21 23:41:25 +0000 UTCAs a fan of open source software, this would be awesome to see. the only other game I've played in that engine was Cruelty squad and that had some impressive features. i guess the engine has modding capabilities, though I'm not sure if that's a plan.

2023-09-21 22:55:11 +0000 UTCrather a lot of information about their new model has been leaked if you look for it. but that would have to be taken with a grain of salt. in the end the trust is broken and I don't see how that can be repaired without some significant changes on their side in management.

2023-09-21 18:55:00 +0000 UTCEven though the circumstances that caused this aren’t so good, this is really cool! I’m excited to see how it feels, I never imagined I’d see Road to Vostok visuals running in Godot. :)
