Dev Update (28/09/2023)
Added 2023-09-28 12:43:35 +0000 UTCHi!
Since the video is now out and there's no more speculation around this engine-topic, I would like to mention few things before I start that fullscale Godot port today.
1. I'm well aware of Godot's limitations and current issues, I could list tens of problems with each engine and Godot is no different here. I basically watched all the "bad" videos / articles / comments about the Godot already last week and I have enough experience to know if they are truly long-term serious problems and if they would been, I would not have decided to make this switch.
Many people forget that game engines are just platforms and it's your job to customize them for you needs or adapt with the current limitations. There's no way that one engine can be fully tailored for every possible genre and game idea, so the "off-the-shelf" version of Godot is just going to be the starting point for me.
2. There's obviously a "thing" going on already now that RTV might become the flagship product for Godot or something like that. If there's anything that I can do to help with the development, I'm more than happy to help but there were no marketing deals, agreements or anything like that related to this decision, that is not how I operate.
I chose Godot simply because I see the open-source potential, I'm having fun while using the engine and even with the current limitations, it's totally viable engine for this game idea. Godot can already provide the positive ecosystem, there's a lot of opportunities already now and it's just something where I want to place this project for the long-term.
If there's a possibility that my work and this project might help Godot to get more positive exposure, that's great but that will be based purely on my development progression with the engine and normal RTV videos / content like I did before. In other words, this project isn't going to be a marketing platform or anything like that, my job is just to make a cool game and that's the only thing that I'm going to focus.
3. It was quite a tough few weeks to consider all the scenarios and risks that this thing could generate, so I'm really happy to see that vast majority is supporting my decision and being positive about the engine choice.
There was a serious risk with this announcement video and it could have caused totally different outcome, so I really tried to be "neutral" in that video, without being hateful towards any other engines and I think the tone in that video was just like I wanted. That's why the video was also a bit delayed since I wanted to get that tone right, so I re-edited some parts to reflect more about my personality, though process and so on.
4. I'm honestly really happy that I can now focus on the development, I mean really happy. I have zero stress or concerns about the whole thing anymore and I think this Unity situation could actually be one the best things that happened to this project in the long run :)
I will be sharing details about the upcoming test builds next week, I seriously need some help with the testing (especially hardware stuff) since I have no way of getting that information and knowledge about the engine performance otherwise.
I will be including some additional debug tools to these upcoming builds, so you can also get a bit more knowledge about the engine and tools that developers use when testing these things.
Thanks for your support!
- Antti (Developer)

For #1 the beauty of open source is making those engine changes to fix issues you encounter. Best case your fixes get upstreamed into the main project if the developers are receptive to patches. Worst case you apply your patches to your own local Godot port. Obviously it would be better to not have to maintain your own version of the engine, but at least it's possible vs the Unity/Unreal's of the world where your complaints or issues might just be ignored. Looking forward to the regular test builds. Do you have plans to setup some sort of community feedback/bug reporting system or will it all be driven through the Patreon community tools?

2023-09-30 03:43:11 +0000 UTC"...this project isn't going to be a marketing platform or anything like that, my job is just to make a cool game and that's the only thing that I'm going to focus..." - this statement, the move to Godot and because I belive thsi game is a winner is the reason I became a member. Respect!

2023-09-30 02:42:31 +0000 UTCA game engine is a tool. We are not the ones to decide how you should do your work. We are here to support the project as a whole. It is great to see you communicating your thoughts so openly and in-depth. I know this has been a hard decision for you to make - but at the end of the day it's 'yes' or 'no' for supporting the development. If somebody stops supporting RTV because of switching a game engine they really missed the point of all of this.

2023-09-29 02:45:22 +0000 UTCThat's so awesome to be a part of this venture into a very untapped game engine with so much potential. I will definitely have to up my testing on the next Godot dev build! I would like to help as much as possible in finding bugs and glitches and such! Now that this unity situation is behind us, I'm very excited!!

2023-09-29 00:16:40 +0000 UTCThe Feedback on the Video was overwhelming positiv. Only saw 1-2 Guys who aren't happy and quit the Support. Who cares about those idiots? Everyone who truly knows you also know that you don't make decisions in a rush or for fun. Take your time, work it out. We fully trust you. Edit: Happy to help with testing the Port :)

2023-09-28 18:19:11 +0000 UTCThe video was very insightful and gave us the usual in depth look into parts of the process the average gamer does not know about. I think one thing should always be remembered with this project, and that's the fact that you have asked for zero money so far. No steam early access, no pay for beta, nothing, so you owe us all nothing. However you still deliver so we are all supporting you.

2023-09-28 15:11:02 +0000 UTCVideo was great! It just not tell how Unity's actions impact the ecosystem but also tells how important role Unity has for you and all game industy. All positive things you sad in video made my day. I really hope that more people thinks like you.

2023-09-28 13:38:47 +0000 UTCGood video, amazing communication as usual Antti. I was glad to hear you wouldn't be trying to tackle 2 engines simultaneously. I'd rather see a delay, and you stay mentally focused on your idea of Vostok, then stuck dealing with 2 game engines. Good luck and can't wait to test the GoDot version.

2023-09-28 12:48:04 +0000 UTCI joined your patreon, as a developer who works with godot, seeing that you switched to godot as well. Very excited to see your journey, and, as a STALKER fan, very excited for the game as well. Best of luck!

2023-09-28 12:46:06 +0000 UTCObviously the experience and personal preference is the biggest thing to think about when choosing an engine, but I feel like we could have got some crazy graphics and high fps with unreal engine
