Yes, that was Tim Curry singing. He started his career on stage. His first role was in Hair (1968). Richard O’Brien (the writer of Rocky Horror) was in Hair with him. Curry also starred in Pirates of Penzance, Amadeus, Midsummer Night’s Dream, and many others. Meat Loaf also started out his career on stage. He had been in an unknown band in the 60s but his career took off when he was in Hair, first in Los Angeles in 1970 and on Broadway in 1972. Then he was in the stage production of Rocky Horror in 1974. The Rocky Horror film was 1976. He put out the album Bat Out of Hell in 1977.

2024-10-20 11:43:47 +0000 UTCRocky Horror is supposed to be a tribute to the kistch of B-horror movies of the 1940s-50s (with really bad plots) meets German cabaret of the 30s and 40s meets 50s rock and roll meets 70s glam rock. It’s not supposed to make much sense. It’s such a shame that your introduction to Rocky is watching it at home on video. It was never meant to be watched like this. It was originally a musical in 1973. It was written by Richard O’Brien (the guy who plays Riff-Raff) and the stage show had much of the same cast — including Tim Curry. Meatloaf wasn’t in the original London production, but had been in the Los Angeles production in 1974 and on Broadway in 1975. Mainly Barry Bostwick and Susan Sarandon (Brad and Janet) were the newbies. It was a VERY progressive thing at the time. Homosexual, bisexual, transgender, transvestite - these were things that were not accepted by the vast majority of society. They were considered mental illnesses. Literally! The movie came out in 1975 to a really negative reception. But the underground drag/performance community in New York started going regularly to the film dressed in character, singing and dancing, bringing props, and talking back to the film in unison with lines that were made up by the audience. Soon it spread around the U.S. I was from a small town in North Carolina and my high school friends and I went every Saturday night. We dressed in character and danced in the aisles. We knew all the lines that had been created by the cult audiences. It was those lines that made the film truly hilarious. It was a participatory experience, not a movie. I was shocked when they released the film to video. It seemed like such a stupid idea. Who wanted to watch the movie quietly at home?!? Without squirt guns and newspapers over our heads when they were singing in the rain, without doing the Time Warp in the aisles, without throwing rice at the wedding and hot dogs when they called Frank-n-Furter a hot dog, without yelling out stupid questions right before the actors on screen “responded” with certain lines. Frank-n-Furter: “I have the secret to life” Audience: “Itself?” Frank-n-Furter: “Itself!” Frank-n-Furter: “Do you have any tattoos, Brad?” Brad: “Certainly not!” Frank-n-Furter (to Janet): “Oh well, how about you?” (Janet giggles) Audience: “She didn’t say no!” Audience: “What’s your favorite high protein drink?” Frank-n-Furter: “Come! We are ready for the floor show.” Janet and audience: “My feet! I can’t move my feet!” Dr. Scott and audience: “My wheels! I can’t move my wheels!” Audience (when Brad tries to move his feet): “My socks! I can’t move my socks!” {Brad sees Dr. Scott on the monitor) Audience: “What does Captain Kirk say to his chief engineer?” Brad: “Hey Scotty!” Narrator: “Lost in time” Audience: “What’s your favorite tv show?” Narrator: “And lost in space.” (All the characters are in the pool) Audience: “Hey waiter, there’s an orgy in my soup!” Dumb, but fun! When I try to watch the movie now, I’ve got a whole second dialog going on in my head. That’s what made it a cult classic!

2024-10-20 10:50:28 +0000 UTCHahaha. Don't let Rocky Horror taint your view of musicals. Even for musicals, Rocky Horror is "out there." Hahaha. Who knows how it became a cult classic, but it is. I still don't exactly understand the plot myself, but I somehow get the feeling that you aren't supposed to. :). There are hundreds of other really great musicals to be seen. :)

2024-10-18 08:00:15 +0000 UTCI was obsessed with this movie in college. I hadn't watched it in at least a decade, and I was like 'wow, this isn't very good'. A lot of good actors, though. There is a sequel, Shock Treatment, which is hated by most Rocky Horror fans because 1) no Tim Curry 2) The actors for Brad and Janet are different. But I still like Shock Treatment, and you guys might like it too. Even if you wouldn't watch it on the channel, I'd recommend at least watching it on your own.

There are theaters all over the US that show this movie annually. It's a true interactive experience. People dress up like the characters, do the dances in front of the movie screen. People are yelling stuff and throwing stuff at the screen. Even if you don't like the movie you'll get a good time out of watching it live at the right theater.

I already liked her but I have a whole new respect for her now. And Mark Ruffalo is f**king hilarious. It's definitely strange and fantastical, and I put it on the same level as The Grand Budapest Hotel, which I consider nearly perfect, in my personal list of great movies. 🤘🏽✌🏽🖖🏽
