2025-07-10 03:01:32 +0000 UTCThis film is just so unbelievable wholesome and I really love how they discuss the importance of animals and pets but mainly dogs. I love Shadows dialog to Chance at the waterfall. The ending used to wreck me! Seeing Shadow give up after all they had been through was so tragic and man the film makers wanted to torture us with not knowing if Shadow made it but to me that scene is a big part as to why this film is so icon. I also love seeing the development with Chance as well. And having Shadow be a golden retriever was the perfect breed to choose for him. What also makes this film so iconic is the amazing animals and trainers. Not once did I ever think they were just waving treats behind the camera and most of the time I feel like they just let the animals do there thing and just filmed them, so many moments they could have re-shot scenes like when the dog for Chance knocked into the tree or he trips quite a few times, I like that they left those in because it felt more real and later the voice actors just reacted to what the dogs and cat were doing. And man, I am so glad they did not make their mouths move when they talked, I hate when they do that. It always looks so bad and takes away from the actual animal. A few fun facts. Don't worry the dog for Shadow was not harmed at all when he fell into the pit, in fact he could easily get out of there and to give the effect for Shadow's limp they put a round wooden bead between his toes, the bead did not hurt him at all, it just gave him a peculiar sensation, causing him to walk with a limp. The cat while doing the river stunt was also not harmed at all. She had been trained on her compound to jump from one rock to another in a stream. She also became accustomed to the water and could swim quite well. And the entire note Kate wrote to Frank was this: "Thanks for feeding the animals as usual, the old dog seems real home sick so I took him and the other two into town with me a few times. They love the ride. If you feel like it take them with you sometimes too. Thanks again, Kate." And they used several different dogs and cats and the trainers had them stay in a room together so they became comfortable around one another. And as far as I know no animals were harmed at all during filming.
