Season 1 and 2 as well as the movie have focused a lot more on the comedy so it doesn't come across too well but the LN has a lot more tender and heartfelt moments like that Campfire scene, including some ship building. Also, this first episode is not canon but it serves to insert a few things that were cut from the Movie, specifically the Campfire, the tranquility girl and the epilogue of v5. sadly, my favorite cut movie scene remains unadapted.
