Some of the S ranks and a massive amount of hunters from their guilds weren't able to defeat them even after THREE raids. The ants are also now evolving and starting to get wings which means soon they'll no longer be confined to the island. S rank gates are rare and no joke. Even multiple S rank hunters will struggle in it. In the first episode I believe we see 4 of the S ranks and a glimpse of their power. Baek (beast transformation), Eunseok (Lightning, died during 3rd raid), Byung-Gyu (Healer, retired), Choi (Fire). So yea, they've been teasing about this Jeju arc since season 1 and how serious it is. Cha (Blondie) we knew was S rank during last season during the first episode so some people forget that too. She did not particpate in the last raid though because she wasn't a hunter at the time. There's also a detail the anime didn't include but the deputy director in america showed Hwang security footage of Il Hwan helping people out of the fire and rubble caused from the ass beating he gave Hwang.

You could have SS or even SSS ranks people, but they all get labeled S-rank. 18:00 You saw Baek's power in the very first episode fighting the ants when he ripped the mandibles off the ant. And Guildmaster Choi threw a fire spell at that wave of ants in the city. 28:00 Hwang just can't admit that a man beat him that bad so he's saying a magic beast.
