Just signed up and was delighted to discover this adaptation coverage. I’m a massive fan of both versions but completely agree that as an adaptation the film doesn’t cut the mustard. Thanks for this one Dom and I’m sorry that YouTube and (I assume) Ghibli won’t let you post it publicly.

Yeah, it seems like the Japanese take copyright to even more of an extreme than the RIAA and MPAA. It sucks that they've poisoned the anime well for you, but you're probably making the right decision.

I just finished reading this book, immediately checked out the movie from the library, and watched it! This video came at the perfect time, as both are very fresh in my mind. I actually read it because of a recent article. This idiot guy realized he had too many male authors on his shelf, so he decided to go to Barnes and Noble and purchase some books written by female authors. He asked a female employee for some choices (you know, because all females innately know all things female) and she gave him a bunch of female romance books. His article, comparing all female writers to romance was panned, and I decided my summer reading was going to include some good books written by female authors. I do agree the romance came out of nowhere. I didn't mind because a previous summer I had read Outlander. Woof! That is a book, in my opinion, that hasn't aged well. In Outlander sex equals love. At least, that's what my interpretation ended up being. They are terrible people who look pretty. In Howl's, I felt the characters were getting to know one another without sex being the focus. There are moments in the book where Howl stops himself to appreciate what Sophie is doing. Yes, at the beginning he's frustrated by this, and it appears he continues the frustration, but there is clearly something else going on behind the scenes. He starts pretend courting ladies instead of really courting ladies, thinking Sophie's jealousy will make her act one way, when it really makes her act another. Okay, so that was an unintended tangent. Point being, it's a solid book written by a female, and I appreciate you giving it focus. Thank you.

still madly in love with the movie, and still didn't have chance to read the book, but also still regarding this as one of the best LiA... That Edwin Starr blasting in a perfect moment still gives me chills.

Oh! Thanks a bunch! I didn't know this was booked based. I am a Miyasaki fan, but I like to see how he defers from the original material and I am NOT upset AT ALL that you respect your line of conduct regarding the adaptation. As you said yourself, Howl's moving castle is a great movie in an of itself, but if it is a bad adaptation, then it is. It does not deter from the greatness of the movie as it is.

Nice! I was lucky enough to see the film first so I am able to thoroughly enjoy BOTH. I know not everyone agrees, but I have a personal rule about always watching the movie first, that way if it's good I'll be able to like it. Becuase let's be honest: in most cases book lovers will like the book better. (I say this with a pinch of salt and a heavy emphasis on the fact that this is my own personal experience with cross-media content.)

We need international fair use regulation. Otherwise shit like this will keep on happening, where people are acting perfectly within the law in their own country get shafted by thin skinned wankers in another country. Can you say Fortnite vs PUBG?

One of my favourite books. I was disappointed in the anime because it was such a bad adaptation and it was so derivative of his other works that it felt almost phoned in.

But BUT... Christian Bale!

This was one of my favorite reviews. The book and movie are so much different. I actually saw the movie first and read the book later and it was interesting because the movie and book are good even though the movie is a horrible adaptation.
