The Story and Games of Matthew Smith | Kim Justice

Finally, a big look at one of the UK's greatest and most enigmatic coders -- the man behind Manic Miner and Jet Set Willy...it's the story of Matthew Smith. Not the most uplifting of stories perhaps, but it's certainly a wild ride. Enjoy!

I haven’t commented on your videos before (I don’t think) but I wanted to drop a line to say that I think you’re doing a great job. As a fellow “content creator” (I hate that phrase) I know how hard it is to keep motivated to produce regular output. Your output is amazing and I hope you keep finding fascinating subjects to put through the wringer.

It's a shame that learning to code as a kid by typing in programs and then using what you learned to make your own programs isn't a thing any more. My first computer was a TRS-80 Color Computer 2 with 16K. Of course I mostly played games on it, there were some great ones too, but I also typed in BASIC programs from the book that came with the computer and learned about a lot of programming concepts at age 6. When early home computers weren't connected to the outside world except for maybe a BBS if you were lucky you made your own fun with them. It also helped that they were simpler and you had to be very hands on to use them. Wanna play a game stored on a cassette or floppy? You'll need to hook up the player and know the right command. This must have been a very big deal in Europe where gaming was much more done on home computers in a back door kind of way (computers technically weren't just video game machines and were intended for many different things...ROFLMAO)
