Hell on Earth - Episode 8: THE STATE

You can tell the Great Vorelli tracks

“Sticky” Stephen Hawking

It seems like a similar sentiment about a good king with "degenerate" advisers was how Russian peasants at the turn of the 20th century saw their Tsar(s). In their minds, he was a good guy who loved the people--he just wasn't aware from his lofty throne of the dirty deals being done in the name of Russia. If only they could get in touch with him and show him all the wrongdoing being put upon them by sketchy administrators, he would make it right! The struggle of Leftists then was not to convince the peasants that they were being oppressed but to convince them that toppling the Tsar would be an appropriate solution. It just goes to show that parasocial relationships always end in disappointment--and sometimes bloodshed!

You mention the lack of language for opposing a monarch themselves among rebellious movements of this era. Interestingly we see that pattern break down in France in 1588. While the Catholic League's hatred of Henri had in previous years been euphemistically channelled at his 'degenerate' advisers who gave him terrible counsel and usurped their true social station. When Henri resolved on 23 December 1588 to assassinate the duke of Guise. The league pamphleteers took their gloves off Henri de Valois, as they now called him, (an interesting precursor to how the French revolutionaries would talk about 'Louis Capet' in 1792) was no longer their king, he was a 'sodomite' and 'hermaphrodite' incarnation of the antichrist who had ceded his right to rule them. There's some funny images from pamphlets of Catholic leaguers trying to escort him into the mouth of hell.

"I am the Senate." - Louis XIV

David DeCorte

idk if this has come up, but you have to do a bonus movie episode about Ken Russell’s The Devils which features bad guy Cardinal Richlieu.

Ted Wood

You guys are killing it.

David Andrews

Is the audio choppy for anyone else?

Kate Baldwin

Why does it say nothing happened in Ireland when things happened in Ireland?

dingbat44

Can you guy please do a series about the age of Napoleon?

ClownBabee24

I haven't had time to listen to all the episodes but I love it.

You know I wish I knew what the view counts were on these videos But man is it disappointing to see a series like this, That is genuinely enlightening and knowledgeable, getting destroyed by the number of comments some of these other episodes that are more just about pop culture. It's not that I don't enjoy the pop culture episodes But it does say something about people and what they want to consume

Kyle Petty

Goddamn amazing episode. I'm starting to get the feeling that this is the true talent core of CTH. Don't go changin' for nobody, boys!

Jonny confuse by corndog

Another banger. One of my favorite aspects is the subtle employ of the Wilhelm Scream. Fantastic job, gang.

I would love personally an extremely detailed look into the meji restoration by Matt and Chris. It's the perfect mix of stupid names as well as being a completey different langauge plus crypto governments and crypto police who police the secret police. I would start earlier but Japan really is like bizzaro world we're feudalism happened but literally no one had any pretense of it being good. Main issue is that the meji restoration as well as the two centuries prior to it are literally some of the most talked about history of any country on earth. Also it's an interesting example of a country developing capitalism from 0 to 100 and killing a shitload of it's people through it and no one brings it up.

parker

Lets just follow these crazy polities and dynasties through WWI. 50 more episodes please :)

Seth Morton

We got links to the music??

Christian

I’d love an interview with Mike Duncan since I’m sure he has more to say than he fit into his first few episodes, and could tie this series to his just finished revolutions. Also a bonus episode looking at the colonial situation during all this, especially in India could be great!

Jack

Explain.

After the laundry list of problems the poor guy was afflicted with, I ended up feeling pretty terrible for Charles II. Guy never asked to be born as a Human Dachshund. Tough hand to be dealt!

Luke Peristy

Haven't listened yet, but all of these are great. I've listened to most at least twice. Transfixing in its horror and how human it makes these sickos of old.

K H

Doesn’t Susan Reynolds’s book Fiefs and Vassals pretty much undercut the idea that the medieval period was dominated by feudalism and that the entire idea of feudalism as a means of social relations is really ill-defined?

Damen Irving

I have a certain guide to revolution you might be interested in

Aaron Kamolz

Matt's monologue about "the transubstantiation of the modern world" and "bureaucratic state operatives with muskets and stock certificates" ... dude, please write books, this is so good.

Tim O'

Actually, 1648 changed everything. Read The New Sovereignty: turning point 1648!

William

You briefly mentioned Descartes and as a ex-student of Philosophy is insane how much is lost in History of Philosophy when the context is not properly explained in the curriculum (at least in my country). Leaning about the 30 years war makes things like Hobbes and Descartes much more focused. The guy that revolutionized modern philolosophy was on White Mountain... that actually makes a lot of sense.

José J. Tesoro

I have an arquebus

Next episode is on Cromwell probably?

I popped champagne when I found out Beer George was one of the last men standing. A consummate survivor til the end, thanks for making his story known

Sage

I've been looking forward to your description of the infamous Habsburg Family "Wreath", and it didn't disappoint. I tried drawing it out once, and gave up out of sheer frustration.

1648 didn't change shit! Read The Myth of 1648!

Norman X. Picklestein

Thanks to Matt, I am now forever haunted by the mental image of a rotund, aged, drunken Beer George recreating the Survivor music video with arquibusier backup dancers

Bryan Jennings

You know, I too am thick-set, tall, and singularly ugly.

CJ

Evan

Great series yall. I can’t keep track of most of the main players but enjoyed it immensely

Michael Ehrenreich

Only if the beer and sausage Germans won out in the end :/

Tim Mullen

As a historian from Poland i feel obligated: hussars wearing the wings is largely a myth, but if they did it was to avoid being caught on a lasso, which was a tactic of Crimean tatars. (Also the sound made enemy horses anxious)

Michał Narożniak

Matt has mentioned the doozers three times now in a week

MC Prescott

Highten these contradictions in my ass yo

A revolution based around taxation of a resource, that then was manipulated by aristocrats and land barons at the cost of countless peasant lives to establish a more efficient means of taxation. Hmm, this sound familiar?

Post Void

I gotta say major thanks - as a yank who lived in Germany for 1.5 years, all of these names are coming back and the added context is super helpful. Hats off to Matt & Chris again

NYCM&AHole

Bureaucratic uncles & their niece wives, am I right?

Hello!

Just finished the episode, and was very moved by Martin Luther's "I have a dream speech" and how it brought on the peace of Westphalia

Max

Give us all the music in a playlost format ! Or defenestration will have to be considered. Need apocalyptic bardcore tunes to make sense out of my daily life.

Do you think Martin Luther would’ve liked Halo: Combat Evolved
