Hell of Presidents: Episode 8 - The Brogressives

Comments

Anna Karenina is the perfect book for Teddy: kostya levin forsaking cushy city living and instead dedicating himself to farming. yeah, sure, there's the Anna and vronsky bits, but we all know he's highlighting the farming passages.

Christopher Price

Incredibly funny that Teddy Roosevelt still sounded like the weaselly wimp he tried so desperately not to be

The middle school I attended was opened in 1919 and named after Woodrow Wilson. In the entryway there’s a large two-story chalk mural by a local artist from around that time period containing, among other things, rose of crosses with “why?” written on all of them. The artist, whose surname was also Wilson, was not a fan of the president.

No Relation to Henry

Having already broken the French, the Germans were about thisclose to breaking the British (and were in the process of doing so) when the first American troops got onto the scene, to the point where the Wilson Administration put aside its "we will fight only as an American Army" policy aside temporarily to rush troops to the front to prop up the British. To that extent, the biggest contribution America made to the Allied war effort was "people", and the Allies do not win on the western front without them.

Bella DeBall

He was scum. When I was teaching High School US history I learned what a racist, misogynist, fascist piece of shit this faux "progressive" was . . . I'd compare him to Obama (who I voted for in '08 not expecting 3rd & 4th Bush Jr. terms).

Mark Schneider

Look at this William Taft, every time I do it makes me laugh.

JR

Roosevelt’s father paid for a substitute during the Civil War (partially I think because his was Southern) and he was teased a little and ashamed of it. He definitely would have paid to fight in the war himself however. Ok, back to reading Wikipedia about trains for the rest of the evening…

Ty Drown

My ancestor Henry M Hoyt was solicitor general under Roosevelt. He was not a nice guy.

Charlie Hoyt

Well done - this was a really great episode. Especially dealing with the racist, fascist Wilson.

The Espionage Act also killed The Masses, Americas biggest socialist magazine , cause having ain’t-war content meant it wasn’t able to have the dirt cheap UPS mass mailing rate which is what made it economically viable and relatively affordable

John Leavitt

who?

100% on the waiting for a fine meal. I listened to episode 52 today with Jeremy Scahill (it's a great ep and he was a really good guest) at the end they talked about how disgusting the display for "our honored statesman" would be on both sides when Kissinger died - Scahill actually asked to come back when it happened. I doubt anyone remembers the exchange but that would be a cool call back.

Matthew Krueger

While slop is late, considering who died I am good with waiting for a fine meal

Robert Wolff

what can I say he's "da man"

Chapo Trap House

Hello Sir Chapo. I hope you will take a deep-dive into Kissinger's wacky adventures now that the worms are eating well.

Per Olav Andresen

Tell Matt to chime in on Kissinger’s death for the Thursday episode.

Andrew Carmichael

You fuckers say blame American textbooks for lack of education on WW1. Maybe mention the books were published by ROBERT MAXWELL!

Will Elliot

Chris. If you see Matt tell him that he was right about Ridley Scott. HE WAS RIGHT.

THEKILLERWHALE
