MM20: 90’s Neo-Noirs feat. Hit Factory Podcast

Will & Hesse are joined by Aaron & Carlee of the Hit Factory Podcast to discuss two neo-noirs, 1991’s One False Move directed by Carl Franklin, and 1994’s The Last Seduction directed by John Dahl. Both explore the classic noir themes of evil, greed, lust & betrayal, with One False Move exploring the dark brutality of the genre, and The Last Seduction having sexy fun with it. Enjoy the 90’s Bills quadruple feature of Paxton, Pullman, Bob Thornton & Buffalo. Also, Linda Fiorentino 🔥🔥🔥🥵.

You must bounce on it. Scythian style!

I agree. You can tell he never wrested in high school tho

Equality State Of Mind

Goofy, yes. That's how cops are, though. They get too far out in the sticks and just give up on calls sometimes.

Equality State Of Mind

You should see them, though. There's two are pretty fun.

Equality State Of Mind

Yeah, and giving them a hug while stabbing them is just unwise, from a criminal point of view, so you know he's got psychology.

Equality State Of Mind

They should have Felix on that one to do some gratuitous commentary on weapons and combat tactics!

Equality State Of Mind

So, the scene where Wendy gets back in the cab after talking to Trish? It's the only time she looked genuinely upset when there was nobody around to swindle; she was worried about getting AIDS, 100%. Given the decade and her perfect narcissism, there is no other reading. She was the protagonist, but she was not a hero. Heroism requires an heroic motive. She was a sexy, evil genius whose only motives were greed and assuaging her own boredom.

In the Ars Amatoria, Ovid calls reverse cowgirl “riding Parthian”

These movie mindset episodes have become some of my favorites, extremely entertaining. Thank you!

Valerie

The male cohost helpfully pointed out that women are underestimated in real life as well

J.P. McD.

Does anyone else think that maybe these women are being underestimated by the men around them and have to use their sexuality as a weapon and/or defense? Didn't hear this come up.

Pattern Recognizer Jr

Loved this episode. Great pairing of films for discussion and awesome guests.

Tim Holland

Hesse can you please 🙏 do Heat vs Den of Thieves?

Tim Adams

Plutos intent on killing in the most gruesome and intimate way is chilling.

Nolan

I recommend the graphic novels Fatale,Criminal,Incognito,The Fade Out,and Scene of The Crime if you want some excellent Femme Fatale/Crime Noir. Pretty much anything by Ed Brubaker with Sean Phillips doing the art is superb in this genre. This episode made me think of those books and older films as well. I need to check these films out. Thanks for covering them🙏🏻

James Browning

According to Wikipedia Linda Fiorentino had considerable Oscar buzz for this role but the academy denied her a nomination because the movie played on HBO before it was in theaters. Just one more reason the academy should be burned to the ground.

Jenkum Terry

Putting it on the watchlist

Jenkum Terry

I shouldn’t be commenting. I know it is annoying. But Hurricane takes the detectives to the uncle shack before he overhears their mockery. His retelling of the interaction with the uncle is what begins their little backyard bbq. He overhears their mockery before taking them to fantasia’s family home, and this is when the cracks in his character really begin to show.

Hardcore Virgin

Hit Factory & Chapo? You love to see it. Dream movie analysis blunt rotation

Owen Morawitz

I wish they did Romeo is Bleeding. It’s perfect for those conversation

Women always be closing

"City? She's in Cow Country" ABSOLUTELY GOD DAMN RIGHT

Mr Mindset, if you do a Paul Schrader double feature with Mishima and First Reformed I will sail to the ends of the earth to evangelize the word of Movie Mindset

Aaaaaaaaaaa

Really glad they mentioned the Pellicano/Fiorentino connection. Truly, completely wild. A Pellicano story would be a perfect Coen Bros thing. He’s like a darker, real life version of Josh Brolin’s character in Hail, Caesar.

Dude of H-town

There’s a Last Seduction ll where Bridget goes to Spain to get her groove back (kill men again).

Meatwad Cosby

The Last Seduction is on Tubi. watching it now!

Erik Aldrich

It doesn’t matter if I’ve seen the movie or even if I ever will, i just really like listening to y’all talk about the movies

Daniel E

Oh nice, Aaron and Carlee are getting the Chapo Bump! 🔥🔥🔥

Wesley Campbell Caretto

The Devil circa 1994: "Why yes, of course I can make a Linda Fiorentino erotic thriller..." {Makes Jade, a film so baffling and off-putting that it somehow manages to not be sexy} "HAHAHAHHAHAAAHAA"

THEKILLERWHALE

As a straight white man, I learned from these movies to stay away from women.

Ben Reed

Can't believe they didn't touch on Gary Fleder's incredibly underrated "Thing to Do in Denver When You're Dead"

Salid Tahsaar

OFM trailer voice sounds exactly like the sample on Audubon by $uicieboy$ lol

etienne

Linda Fiorentino in The Moderns is on another level altogether for me.

Phubarrh

Only leading role for Bill Paxton? Has Will not seen “A Simple Plan”? Another 90s noir with Billy Bob?

Scott Grabel

paxton heads, check out Bill Paxton's New Wave Band, Martini Ranch. they've got some bops. James Cameron directed one of their music videos and it's the most James Cameron thing imaginable. https://youtu.be/rkz0Lx6VyxA?si=woWv8WRRWp4ENNN3

Fingerless

Tommy Lee Jones is notorious for being an asshole so he’s got some nerve blackballing Linda Fiorentino.

emalco

They mentioned it when they said Tommy Lee Jones refused to do Men In Black 2 if Linda Fiorentino was gonna be in it.

Robert Ditty

I’m upset no one brought up Men In Black which was my introduction to Linda Fiorentino and that was probably my very first introduction to thinking women are hot

Thomas Ceparano

Carlee’s analysis is excellent

emalco

Me too buddy, me too

snudge crunkies

The LAPD cops, the retired deputy, and the literal child getting lost on country roads was so goofy.

Ian

That scene in One False Move where Bill Paxton wrestles that guy trying to break into his house with an axe rules.

Ben Reed

At first I thought you said this movie featured "Lucinda Williams" and it sounded just amazing! But Cynda Williams is fine, too. Lucinda Williams WAS in Allison Anders' "Strutter" and she basically played herself, out of a cabin in Joshua Tree. It was awesome.

The Children of Jack Acid

Linda Fiorentino yes yes

Malaparte_Animal

I’m so stoked for this episode. Both these movies slap. The Last Seduction, especially, is insanely good.

Jordan Hunnicutt

Movie Madness, tho, too.

Pat Yourell

going movie mode 🍿

Evan Tiesman

I'm glad to have something to quench my thirst other than 1996's Bound

Leebos

Best double feature so far this season. Real pumped for the Gorky Park / Pennies from Heaven ep !

J T

I love movies

Nick Paradise

Just rewatched the last seduction right before this was posted! So glad you’re discussing this.
