MM22: Prisoners of Life - Altman in the 90’s feat. Andrew Hudson & Taylor
Added 2024-05-29 11:00:09 +0000 UTC
This week on Movie Mindset we return to the genius of Robert Altman. Where last we left our hero he was examining the American character through the lens of a whorehouse and the city of Nashville, TN. For this episode. Will and Hesse are joined by our friends Andrew Hudson (@intellegint) and Taylor (@Tupacdurex) to discuss two Altman films about Los Angeles in the 90s: The Player and Short Cuts. In the The Player, Altman skewers the movie business in a meta satire about a studio executive who gets away with murder, and then in Short Cuts, adapts the work of Raymond Carver to devastating effect with one of the best casts ever assembled. Check out @tupacdurex’s Movie Twitch Stream: twitch.tv/bobygamesdotcom
Fuck you guys for Short Cuts. I hope you make it funny. Somehow....

Only two of the stories were directly taken from Carver’s writing, so much water so close to home and a small good thing, but Altman was a huge fan and he totally captures the spirit of Carver’s work perfectly. Also popeye is one of my all time favorite movies, a movie that has me beaming for the full 2 hours

Short Cuts is not streaming anywhere right now. Fortunately I saw the theatrical releases of both films. I didn’t know shit about directors back then, but recognized these films were very special and my love affair with Robert Altman began.

At the funeral scene in The Player, the screenwriter friend who delivers the eulogy is wearing the exact same outfit as Griffin's murder victim. As if the movie sees these unduly confident, untalented writers as clones, "breeding" too, like the clueless executives.

The scene in The Player where Griffin goes into the police station and assumes Whoopi Goldberg wants to meet in her office and she tells him to sit down in front of everyone reminded me so much of the scene in McCabe and Mrs Miller where Beatty goes to talk business with Butler and tries to meet in the back room for privacy but Butler tells him to sit down and talk in front of all of his men. Almost seemed like a callback or something

Carver is due a little more credit for Short Cuts here, but I’ve always appreciated Altman as a brilliant orchestrator of some very heavy material in a way that makes it sing.

Great story. Carver was great. The dead woman on the fishing trip is from Carver's So Much Water So Close to Home. A chilling story.

I saw “The Player” when it was first released. I was in college and a textbook for my Chicano film class featured a scene from The Player on the cover. The villain getting away with it was a mind-blowing concept at the time. I remember enjoying “Short Cuts” (as a Bay Area cat, I HAD to support Huey Lewis’s acting debut), but I never went down an Altman rabbit hole. Thanks for the inspiration and the japes. ✌🏽

I always wondered if Jack Black's dog kicking Motorcycle Cop character in Anchorman was meant to be a kind of homage to Short Cuts.

Just let Menaker talk movies. Can’t listen to Hesse and the other jokers just summarize scenes and say lines from the movie we just watched.

Also a second watch of The Player

One of my regulars worked with Altman starting with 1987’s “Beyond Therapy” and until he left the industry in the early 00s. He was a poster designer and did some amazing work, including one of the original Hellraiser posters. Altman smoked him out in his trailer when they first met to discuss poster ideas and said “Do you even know what this picture is about? …. Because I sure as fuck don’t and I guess we’re going to figure it out.” Absolute legend.

Not sure if Hesse was joking about the Fred Ward fishing trip being its own movie. I’m not very smart. But that movie is called Jindabyne.

I like Nashville... but he should have hired singers and taught them to act, rather than picking his favorite actors and failing to get them to sing well. It tarnishes the whole film.
