898 - Bragg and Tag feat. Seth Harp (1/10/25)

We’re joined by investigative journalist Seth Harp to look at the two New Years terror incidents. Both involving military personnel associated with Fort Bragg, Seth helps us unpack the bizarre details around the attacks & attackers, their connections with the infamous fort, and the sprawling network of crime and conspiracy connected to U.S. special forces that could be connected to these events.

Pre-order Seth’s new book “The Fort Bragg Cartel,” covering everything discussed here and more, NOW: https://www.amazon.com/Fort-Bragg-Cartel-Trafficking-Special/dp/0593655087/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2IBFCDHXPCDNK&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.DChbCJr_ack2Y0E77PHx1A.c3bQI937DRUIMbRbVsdKhtyPbEan_qiFTtz0ZgDgQP0&dib_tag=se&keywords=the+fort+bragg+cartel+seth+harp&qid=1736454146&sprefix=the+fort+br%2Caps%2C152&sr=8-1

Malcom Nance is so cool because he got into it with a Polish crypto account he mistook for the only QAA host who wasn't dunking on him

Chapo Bath House

Hezbollah is not destroyed. Israel is at its weakest in decades. While thinking of the damage America has done to the Middle East might suffice the soldiers podcasts for cope about their endless losses, militarily revenge is not a good idea. It only underscores our failures on the battlefield. And Americans working for the cia quite literally handle drugs.

A+ episode and guest - digestible and informative. Thanks y'all

We heard of "Stolen Valor" but are we going to let these operators get away with Stolen Street Cred?

Fascinating stuff. Thank for sharing.

The guy who massacred a bowling ally in Maine last year was an Army munitions guy and totally schizo as result. Unfortunately that didn’t rate among the local yokel cops enough to take his guns before he killed like 15 random ppl.

Eric K

I think a lot of Green Berets would agree

Eric K

The guy who shot up the bowling ally in Lewiston, ME last year, an Army Reservist , was also a munitions expert and by all accounts developed the schizophrenia that drove him to mass murder as result

Eric K

My dad was an active duty Green Beret from the mid 60s to the late 80s. Def had some ridiculous stories about the SEALS (he though they were a joke and recommended they be disbanded after overseeing some training debacle in Greece in the 70’s) and his experience w the Ur Iran-Contra criminal element at Ft Bragg in the early 80s is mainly what cost him a very promising career - discharged as a Captain. He finally made Major while in the ‘reserves’, but he could hv easily gone all the way to The Pentagon if he’d played ball w those pricks. Instead he chose to say fuck you instead of looking the other way RE some gun running bullshit. One of the good guys if there was such a thing.

Eric K

israel is america's proxy in the region. it's most forward military base in the middle east. everything israel does is at the direction of the US.

You should just listen to it, it's not a waste of your time.

What a dumb question. I was referring to the description of the ep. Don't come at me trying to be catty, half the posters here are bitches I swear to god.

Mountain Dew Code Bipolar

"conspiracy ep" do you not know what Fort Bragg is?

Fascists R. Soft

Is this a conspiracy ep? I don't really want to waste my time.

Gotta love Felix saying the USA doesn’t have oil…

William Ricks

Came here to say this. We're also number one in natural gas.

Roger Peet

They weren't aiming to annex Lebanon or South Lebanon. Sure, it would've been nice as a maximalist aim im sure they thought, but otherwise they were aiming to attack and otherwise disrupt and discredit Hezbollah as a fighting force and political organization. Needless to say their plan worked. And they backed off of calling for "annihilation Iran" only because they sensed current US reluctance to go THAT far at the moment. I'll wait til Trump gets in and see how fast the rhetoric changes back.

Tyler Sutherland

I would just like to say that that man in Vegas owes a serious apology to the Coca-Cola™️ corporation for not involving them.

Nah bro, Israelis know exactly what they're doing. And 75% percent of their society agrees with it and 35% want to go full on camps and extermination of all Palestinians in Israeli territory. Americans are brainwashed and don't know the truth. If we did we would NOT be supporting this. Majority of Americans don't want to be responsible for a genocide.

Reminds me of a good Trump bit when he teases “the n-word” but then quickly says “the n-word, nuclear”

I'm sure Felix wouldn't disagree, but I found it funny he used Israel as an example of a unaccountable society while both broadcasting from the US and covering a topic like this. We are easily the most unaccountable people shielded from consequence. We all have war profiteers in our families.

Justin Thomas

Holy shit, I grew up literally behind ft Bragg. I always felt a deep spiritual darkness around that whole place, and now I know why.

'Like' isnt just stuttering but can be a method of deliberate dialectical verbal emphasis and that is a hill I will. Like. Die on.

Agent Grange

So annoying listening to important topics like this being butchered by the ‘like’ speech impediment, which Felix seems unable to kick.

Alex Gullen

The Vegas bomber makes me think back to the older stories of US special forces in Syria saying they feel like they are being actually, literally haunted because of traumatic brain injuries they get from repeated artillery pressure waves back when they were just tossing shells over the border at anything that moved then saying they were ISIS. I think there's a real case to be made that these tier one operators are all catching a sort of "combat induced schizophrenia" between the repeated brain injury, lead exposure, and whatever the fuck the DOD is pumping these werewolves up with. On top of that, it's clear that after he vaporized kids in Afghanistan he came home and was driven insane with the idea of someone being able to do to us what he did to Afghans. It's a step beyond shoot-and-cry imperial hysteria. It's the mind destroying thought of "if I could do this to someone over there, why wouldn't God lets this happen here? What's stopping china from turning American kids into hamburger meat like I could?" So he started having disillusions of Chinese drones hovering over our cities, the same way he directed drones in Afghanistan. That specific combo of combat schizophrenia and imperial anxiety is, obviously, deadly.

Agent Grange

Unfortunately the US is the number one oil producer in the world ahead of Russia and SA

Drew Middleton

I haven’t listen to the whole episode yet so maybe this is covered at some point, but this is more related to JBLM which is a base that underwent rapid expansion during the war on Terror. Before 2010 it was actually two bases, army base, Fort Lewis, and Air Force Base McCord, which combined to form joint base Louis McCord. Basically this is the main base that the army deployed out of from the West Coast. You can find articles though about how around 2011 to 2015 iirc that soldiers that were being med boarded out for PTSD had their diagnoses reversed and were re-deployed. I mentioned it in another episode chat but JBLM is also where Army sniper SSG Robert Bales was stationed prior to committing mass murder of 16 Afghan civilians in 2012, Kandahar. He had a bit of a local rap sheet prior to that too such as assaulting a security guard, assaulting his girlfriend, and a hit and run for which he was apparently detained for a period of time. Bales blames his actions in Kandahar on having been given mefloquine for malaria which has been shown to cause brain damage that mimics PTSD. He did also sustain a TBI in 2002 when his humvee flipped over. My take on this is that the military is dependent on the poverty/wealth inequality capitalism causes in the US for recruitment and serves to maintain US capitalist global hegemony. Without theses capitalist-imperialist wars which are inherently unethical, the unethical behavior by these soldiers wouldn’t exist but if you expect soldiers to prosecute an unethical war ethically, that seems an untenable contradiction. And when one has a habit of and has been rewarded for unethical behavior; it’s a tough habit to break just because you come home from war. Especially when after a person leaves active duty, all the military provided welfare they had disappears.

Noctor

Felix has got to record a Chapo-Lawton crossover episode with Larry about prison and criminal justice, or anything for that matter. I know he’d do it

Tommy McCormick

Really looking forward to his book!

Tbh their is a decent chance that shortly after the war in Ukraine is finished US will kick something off in Georgia to force an a Russian occupation of Georgia to keep the sanction regime going and also to try and further severe relations between Russian & Post Soviet Bloc in Central Asia they are already trying to do.

eduard karpoev

small correction: the lawyer mentioned at the beginning of the episode is named Timothy Parlatore, a former mob lawyer who represented Eddie Gallagher, represented 45 before quitting in 2022, and is retained by Shawn Ryan as his own lawyer. Speaking of Shawn Ryan, I believed he regaled Megyn Kelly (of all people) of his time as a cocaine dealer. He has podcast views in the millions (3.8 million YouTube views for his Trump interview and 2.1 million views for his Eddie Gallagher episode - he has had on multiple notable freaks) and seems to be this born-again Christian with podcasts on Jesus returning and others on aliens. Idk, it's really weird. Chapo favorite Tim Kennedy is also tangentially involved - because of course he is!) Per his Insta, he competed with Livelsberger on The Ultimate Soldiers Challenge 13 years ago. Matthew Cole's Code Over Country delves into the crimes of the Navy Seals and delves into great detail on the murder of Logan Melgar (amongst other things). The SEAL biting the face of a fellow sailor is I think a reference to an attack that occurred during a Fourth of July party in Iraq in 2019 - which I believe was also partly a celebration of Gallagher getting acquitted a couple days earlier. There is a really good article by the AP about it: https://apnews.com/article/ap-top-news-ca-state-wire-middle-east-islamic-state-group-politics-101efca1d3589f100c4f2262e984aa22 But to summarize what happened, what seems to have started as consensual sex devolved into this brutal attack where the woman was bitten, hit, strangled, and raped. She was able to contact a friend who photographed her injuries and helped report it. The platoon, Foxtrot of Team 7, was pulled out of Iraq. The SEAL in question, Adel A. Enayat, got off the more serious charges. From a different AP article: Enayat pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of assault consummated by battery for biting the sailor’s face and grabbing her neck during what his lawyer described as rough, consensual sex. And in one of the most passive ways to describe choking another person: [Enayat] agreed with the facts read by the judge that he “applied pressure to her neck that caused her to have difficulty breathing.” He claimed he was too drunk to remember what happened.

I mean, Israel still couldn't invade southern lebanon, and pretty clearly backed-off of "erasing Iran" like they were threatening, so I don't think that's a very accurate interpretation?

As somebody who was raised on defense industry money with parental figures who had high security clearance it came as a surprise to hear that new tech war projects are not secret. I'm skeptical 🤨

Kathy Johnson

How is it possible that the US backed Tajik resistance when they backed both corrupt elections in Afghanistan which led to Pashtun presidents. The Taliban and hekmaytars force as well as the leader of ISISK are Pashtun as well. The only resistance Tajik force in Afghanistan comes from Massoud and that’s still a minority force.

Bastel nooristany

One thing i never hear mentioned is that at some point, the dod decided that ptsd acquired in a combat zone was not medically disqualifying, or clearance disqualifying, as needed by jsoc. I have met fucked up guys with a ts and ten deployments, and really nobody thinks anything of it. Waivers are super easy, too, so if your ptsd causes you to drive a bike into a wall at 100 and you survive they welcome you back. I think with the jsoc guys its the overreliance on them after iraq. None of the presidents after bush wanted to take shit for boots on the ground so its jsoc and contractors. I was at a joint/ jsoc base in central america a while back and there was a distinct difference in the navy and army guys. Army guys were chill. Didn't say much. Navy guys were cocky wouldnt salute etc. I was told it was because the army had more of those guys plus a bigger pool right below to choose from, where the navy guys were on a perch because they were their only type in their branch. Made sense but i dont know.

jbwhat

@Seth Harp: read the PNAC's manifesto "Rebuilding America's Defenses" from the late 1990s. The ultimate destination for all of these regime changes is China. The whole thing comes off as close to Underpants Gnomes as anything you'll ever read. "Step 1: Invade Iraq! Step 2: ? Step 3: Confront China!"

Demented Avenger

About Green Berets & SEALS. Green Berets generally except those who do 18X contracts have to had been in the military 3 to 4 years before going to selection while Navy SEALS you could hypothetically go from walking into the Naval Recruiters office & having finished BUDS in the span of a year. Which is why they each have their reputations. Not even mentioning how much bigger Army SF compared to NSW

eduard karpoev

Man why do people discriminate people for gooning sad world 😢

Goonba

It's a testament to Will's boundless optimism that after how thoroughly Iran and Hezbollah got outmanuevered and then pasted by the incompetent pedophiles in the IDF that he honest to God postulated to the guest about a scenario where the Iranian military isn't just completely annihilated, as if Iraq wasn't the answer to his own ask relating to Iraq. Saddam's forces got destroyed, but they aren't what caused us to leave; insurgency was, over the course of years. These guys really do still believe that there is an "Axis of Resistance", as if those fucking idiots in Hamas didn't just dogwalk over 100k innocent civilians and every street gang cosplaying as revolutionary resistance movements into wheat threshers that are operating without much difficulty beyond procuring arms to continue genocide and expansion.

good episode, only note is that the gulf hasn't really been involved in backing HTS over the past 5-6 years due to their own narco-deals with assad on captagon, it's really been mainly turkey (which is part of why they get so many fighters from turkic central asia rather than the arab middle east)

I'll have you know I graduated top of my class in the Navy Seals, and I've been involved in numerous secret raids on Al-Quaeda, and I have over 300 confirmed kills. I am trained in gorilla warfare and I'm the top sniper in the entire US armed forces. You are nothing to me but just another target. I will wipe you the fuck out with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fucking words. You think you can get away with saying that shit to me over the Internet? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am contacting my secret network of spies across the USA and your IP is being traced right now so you better prepare for the storm, maggot. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your life. You're fucking dead, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can kill you in over seven hundred ways, and that's just with my bare hands. Not only am I extensively trained in unarmed combat, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the United States Marine Corps and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of the continent, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little "clever" comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. But you couldn't, you didn't, and now you're paying the price, you goddamn idiot. I will shit fury all over you and you will drown in it. You're fucking dead, kiddo.

Everyone needs to read Drugs as Weapons Against Us by J Potash to understand that the government not only absolutely funds black budget projects with domestic drug trade, but also actively encourages illicit drug use, and created “Drug Culture” to a) create a market for their products, b) destabilize working class communities and c) derail youth led social movements. Weird Scenes Inside the Canyon is a good follow up on this topic

Don’t count out the cyborgs yet. Artificial limb tech has come a long way. And plenty of military personnel with missing limbs would go back if you told them they could be in Section 9 from Ghost in the Shell .

It’s onsets in someone’s early 20’s normally. But that doesn’t mean someone can’t have undiagnosed issues that the people around them just write off as ‘bad behavior’ until they become violent.

Abolish the Navy SEALs. The Navy shouldn’t have their own ground forces but wet. No wet soldiers.

Could be late onset or undiagnosed. My aunt wasn’t properly diagnosed until she was in her late 70’s in a assisted living facility. This all due to lack of self care caused by her extreme anxiety and paranoid personality.

Multiple people have alluded to the idea that advisors in DC think a nuclear war might pan out favorably. Their minds are completely cooked in the same way the JSOC guys are. Because they were successful in abusing peasants they believe in their own mythology. It would be like if a guy on Joe Rogan psyched himself up into thinking he could beat up a gorilla because he won the slapfight championships. I'm honestly not convinced the US even has the capacity for accurately testing and assessing new weaponry anymore, because the cost of failure is so insignificant as far as the contractors are concerned, or the need would signal such a scale of destruction that US currency wouldn't even matter anymore.

K H

The way they played Jabar's name so many times, and how the FBI guy said it seemed weird. The fact he went to Canada for some reason a little before this also strikes me as suspicious. The fact he was apparently down with Isis of all possible Muslim causes at this point in time. It really reminds me of when Hillary lost and they immediately blamed Russia. It's the work of people who's brain is stuck 10-20 years in the past. To me it is hackneyed enough it kind of seems like someone who really loves Israel would facilitate in hopes of invoking greater US commitment to that project in the coming years.

K H

When forced to by violence and defeat. Might require an apocalypse.

K H

I can’t make a generalization of the people I’ve met as notably arrogant, although I understand the sentiment. It’s like a literal combat sport. They are often insufferable hard asses, yet frequently kind. To me, there is something about the competitiveness along with lack of institutional oversight and change, with some other problems too. I don’t know what things Biden did, but they were unpopular. Diversity type initiatives? Changing group emblems? The withdrawal? Many people put their papers in. The domestic drug trafficking isn’t surprising but all these crimes are nauseating. There’s a lot of 3rd party weirdos that add to the problem. I can generalize that a lot of these dudes are into right wing media (and maga). And you don’t have to look very far to hear about dark past. The job descriptions they have vary from things like foreign language skills, to engineering, to mission planning and, of course, the snipers. I remember everything Mr Harp spoke of as concise news stories that came and went with a childlike confusion from the town. I still have a difficult time wrapping my head around the things that happen on deployment. Pete Hegseth is a total douchebag and Mike Walz seems like a cold, stubborn traditionalist. I think some much needed changes are on the way though. And my knowledge is quite limited.

One guy trying to cram some thoughts into a post: -Politicians are ultimately responsible for how these mouth breathing knuckle draggers are used. -Any boys club privilege should not be allowed, especially when it involves breaking obvious laws. -They need a more systematic implementation of support groups etc and help with things like online complexities of life. -it’s a hyper competitive place with a lot of different people, but mostly jocks & gear head types (and a noticeable number of Christians) I would say. -The bonds they form with each other seem to be the strongest. -There’s a lot of rough neighborhoods around the base to bottom out in. Marital problems are common. I wish I would have had a chance to shout out to Matt. I think some good will come from his passing. I’m an idealogical oddball too, just trying to do what’s true. I can’t believe I’m posting this. Thank you Seth 👍

I don't really see any angle on manufacturing consent considering a. we're in the lamest of lame duck sessions and b. however much isis exists in the middle east, we're on their side. some on reddit were talking about it deflecting from luigi but he's still due his day in court, so that's a rather flimsy deflection, and the attack got a january 1st bowl game postponed, which is a real bummer for the bread and circus brand of opioids. an attack around the super bowl (same city even) that can somehow be blamed on isis in west africa, and now he have to help our buddy in Macron to tame his unruly neo-colonies--that makes sense. but i really liked the analysis on everything being license to tighten any free speech and the looming horrorshow of Trump's foreign policies.

The operator Tom Clancy larp podcast they mention is hilarious in tone. bizarre but not uncommon. Crazy because, on intrigue alone, the real causes of mind broken war crime vets and in general the history of US imperialism is so much gripping than any pro America conspiracy narrative slosh.

back home in LA. very fortunately our place was never really in threat of actual fires. But after our power was out for over 12 hours and the air quality was abysmal, we got a hotel in Anaheim for a few nights and I basically spent the last two days hanging out in downtown disney. Glad to be back with minimal disorder, though everything outside is covered in ash.

Chapo Trap House

tbh i felt like the trueanon ep was pretty lackluster, just spitballing based on the same shit we all can see on twitter. stoked for this interview with seth harp, haven't listened yet

Lmao I listen to the TrueAnon episode on this, Liz recommends their two Seth Harp episodes as background so I listen to those, and then immeadiately open Chapo's page to find a Seth Harp Fort Bragg episode dropped 20 min ago. These people have me pegged.
