Field Of Dreams (Cut Version)

Ray Kinsella, a baseball fan and farmer in Iowa, hears voices along with a vision of a baseball diamond, urging him to build a baseball field in his backyard. Let us know your thoughts below!

You guys were definitely overthinking it. It’s a movie full of magical happenings. It’s based on a book about Shoeless Joe. Ray helps to make other people’s dreams come true, and resolves the unfinished business between himself and his father at the same time. It’s one of those films where you just have to suspend your disbelief. You seriously need to watch Bull Durham now. It also stars Kevin Costner who plays an experienced catcher who’s brought to a minor league baseball team to help coach and develop a young, cocky pitcher. It’s got all the best things about baseball wrapped up in the story.

MLB has started playing games in a cornfield occasionally in honor of the film! Terrific atmosphere for a game.

You guys need to watch Major League.

The reason the film seems so surreal is that Shoeless Joe, the book it’s based on, and a lot of the other writings of its author, W.P. Kinsella, are great examples of the genre magical realism. I read the book before seeing the movie and fell in love with it (in the book, Ray kidnaps J.D. Salinger, author of The Catcher in the Rye, instead of the fictional Terrence Mann). It’s worth a read. So is another of Kinsella’s books, The Iowa Baseball Confederacy, about a man who goes through a rift in time to witness an epic multi-day game between a team of an Iowa town’s all stars and the 1908 world champion Chicago Cubs that had much higher stakes than anyone involved actually knew. Sadly, it’s never been adapted as a movie. If you want suggestions for a movie, if you want to learn more about the Black Sox scandal, I recommend Eight Men Out, a drama that features a very recognizable cast. I’d also recommend you guys check out the documentary Ken Burns did on Baseball. It’s a national treasure.
