Having the bad news at the end of every episode was not the original intent of the shows writers. When it debut on television, it had… Terrible ratings. The show is a colt classic now, but almost got canceled nine different times during its five year run. The script writers had to edit that stuff in just to give what little audience they had a reason to come back next week because it was really struggling at the start. They were basically improvising as they went along based on the ratings so that makes a little bit choppy and a little bit messier than perhaps it needed to be at times.
