It's quite of sad, really, Fengxian got bit by 2 rich guys, but she see Lakan as the way out, as in she might actually got a feeling for him. Then she intentionally like, impregnate me, kinda deal. So her price of bought out would drop, hence, Lakan could afford it, but because of study abroad bullshit and now she's the ever pregnant courtesan, her value went down the hill so much that streetwalker can f her, hence the syphillis. This is so sad. If it worked out, it suppose to be like in Episode 3 with concubine Fuyou, that's happy ending. For Fengxian, this is bad ending.

2024-10-09 09:59:31 +0000 UTCI don’t think the old lady is at fault because Maomao birth almost put them all out of the street and Fengxian is prideful so she probably wanted to work as she felt guilt it was also said earlier that she hid it. Anyway the fact the the old woman protect and kept Fengxian is proof she cared and her keeping Lakan away makes sense. All she knows is this guy showed up got her pregnant and disappeared, I wouldn’t trust him either.

2024-09-30 03:10:09 +0000 UTCAs far as the anime goes it's a mere assumption that the "Old Bitch" knows the real actual situation, there is no indication that she was in on it, she was just left to deal with the consequences that nearly ruined the brothel, which is just how things work in the pleasure district. The fact that Fengxian wasn't just thrown into some ditch is rather extremely generous treatment for the time and place they are in.

Lakan is seen as a bad guy by the main cast (Jinshi, Maomao etc) and with high respect and distance by everyone else as he is very high ranking strategist,and a person who treats people as go or shogi pieces and not as human beings. Nobody knows Lakan's real situation besides Maomao (who still hates him anyway), The Old Bitch (the real bad guy in the story, who is the reason why Mao's mom has syphilis), and ofc Maomao's adoptive father. Even Meimei doesn't know the full story by this episode, and treats Lakan well as he is just a patron who likes to play with her, and she likes to spend time with him. It is a very well written unexpected twist, you hate the dude to the moment his POV is revealed, when you have 180 degrees change in the way you view his character.

2024-09-14 11:58:38 +0000 UTCThis episode was where the show kind of lost me. This would have been a great twist if they hadn't gone so far painting Lakan as the bad guy leading up to it. Even rewatching it with context, the way every character (except Meimei) acts when Lakan is involved just doesn't make sense to me if they know the situation. It makes it feel less like an unexpected twist and more like I'm being pranked by the writers.

It’s hard to tell but she IS missing part of her left pinky finger which her mom cut off. She also has a nightmare of when it happened in an earlier episode.

If you also remember Maomao's nightmare about her mother raising a knife at her when she was a baby. She cut off the tip of her pinky. I know he appeared prideful when he said about damaging the courtesan, but I think he was just cynical against himself after so many years, he just copes with it this way - keeping in mind, he doesn't know that Fengxian is still alive.

2024-09-13 19:10:26 +0000 UTCI've thought of Lakan portraying himself as a villain to be his self-imposed penance: he hates himself for his part in the whole matter, so other people should similarly revile him for his actions, so while all his his statements are technically true, he phrases it in a while intended to evoke revulsion.

2024-09-13 18:37:11 +0000 UTCYup, we were all fooled by the author when it came to Lakan. This episode with its big twist was so sad. I think Lakan's prosopagnosia/face blindness is what makes him seem like such a creep because people are simply game pieces and not really actual people to him. As explained in this episode, he (now) sees (almost) everyone as either a chess piece (round stone with a word written in either black or red) or go piece (black or white blank round stone). Chinese chess is similar to international/Western chess. One of the difference is that instead of having differently shaped pieces to indicate the value of the piece, the pieces are all round tiles with a specific word on them to denote the value. Oh! And yes, it's the same Meimei, which, I think is the reason why she's the one who usually serves Lakan when he visits the brothel and also why she told Maomao that he's not that bad in that previous episode when Maomao was told to hide because he was visiting.

2024-09-13 18:17:02 +0000 UTCYou thought he assaulted her previously because he said he "thought about forcing himself on her", but what he was referring to in that instance was the bet. Her proposal was if he won he could "take" what he wanted and if she won she could do the same. When she said that he thought about asking to play chess (which he never lost at) instead of go and so when he won he would have sex with her as his "winnings". In the end though he chose to play go, which she excelled at, dismissing the thought in the end.

If I interpreted it correctly, once the uncle was “disgraced” by being exiled from the rear palace, the father saw their closeness as negative. I believe he forced him abroad in a way to cleanse the influence from the disgraced uncle. Lakan didn’t even know he would be gone that long, and was never able to communicate with Maomao’s mom, so she understandably thought he ghosted her after sleeping with her
