2025-01-08 02:03:20 +0000 UTCPrez you made a comment like, “Why are some humans so bad?” And, while nominally I agree with you, I don’t think it applies in this case. Raava said that Earth is home to the humans, and spirits have drifted over from the spirit world. The spirits have invaded earth and driven the humans to live exclusively on the back of the lion turtles. Many of the spirits attack humans on sight, regardless of circumstances, and will possess and alter the humans into hybrid monsters. Humans being violent against the spirits is, more or less, justified in this case. The human world has been invaded by, seemingly, unbeatable eldritch beings of unfashionable power that twist, alter, and corrupt the world around them in unnatural ways and have driven the natural denizens to the ends of the world, to the point they border almost on extinction. The spirits have stolen the entire world and claimed it for themselves, it’s not unreasonable for the humans to fight back and take back the land they were born to. Especially since, as far as the fire humans have experienced, no spirit has ever treated humans as an ally. The air humans are different, but even they leave in fear and seclusion, running from things that are new to them and exploring only within a short distance of the lion turtles they call home. It would be really, really hard, borderline impossible, to get humans to see a different point of view when they have spent their entire lives being attacked and killed by the spirits simply for existing. Is using violence to counter violence the correct answer? Absolutely not, but it’s not an unreasonable one. When you are attacked, you defend yourself, that’s not even human nature, it’s the nature of all living things. Humans can be considered awful and shitty for a great many things in a great many stories, and most times humans being bad is often the correct take. But in the context of Avatar’s world building… I cannot honestly fault the humans here. It more lore came out that when spirits first started drifting over the humans attacked on sight because they were strange and weird, the spirits’s reaction action would be more understandable, but only to a point. Even in that situation, the humans cannot actually affect the spirits until the lion turtles grant them bending. So you still end up with a being of immeasurable power tormenting creatures that cannot harm it because they were afraid of the being and attacked it. I just cannot fault the humans in this story. If it helps to rationalize it, think of it not unlike an alien invasion movie, like Independence Day, or War Between Worlds or whatever, except the aliens win and humans have been living in small villages and caves for thousands of years since the aliens wiped out all civilization. Because the spirits are not so different in that regard.
