They have been born, raised, and live in a society where murder, slavery, and forceful taking of wives was not only normal, but celebrated. How could you value humans outside of your group, much less have love for mankind, with that culture and mindset. Pretty sure that's why they have that scene shortly before the slaughter. what a vicious and cruel culture. This raid and the one when the old lady and daughter take in Thorfinn, feed and care for him, lie to the search party, only for him to signal the attack are soooo brutal. That raid hits alot harder on a rewatch bc in the first watch you haven't come around to this crew by that point.... Also, as someone else said, they're no longer in Wales at this point. They've crossed into Mercia which is part of England. Wales and England constantly warred so Askelaad wasn't killing his countrymen. I do think , under his facade, it haunted him but he felt he had no choice bc 1-the villagers wouldve died a slow and painful death, from malnutrition 2- if he was lenient he would be seen as weak thus losing the trust and support of his men at a critical moment.

Like the first time they were back on land after killing Thors or when they sent Thorfinn out to scout, when he met that lovely mother and her daughter who took care of him when he was injured, just to most likely be slaughtered by Askeladd and his men after Thorfinn gave the signal. So it's really just a reminder like "I know you are starting to like them but remember this is what they usually do to earn money, you saw them do it, they have been doing it this whole time and they will continue doing so".

If we had this type scene in episode every episode we would have been like "Oh look they're pillaging again, so what!" Now we are horrid by the reality of what Vikings do.
