My understanding of Thorfinn's outlook about non-violence is that he is likely completely aware that his goals are not realistically attainable to the fullest extent in a world like theirs. His conviction in atonement for the people he's killed, his ideals of eliminating war and slavery, those things are quite ambitious. However, knowing a goal isn't realistic, doesn't mean it's not worth doing your best to work toward said goal. It doesn't mean it's impossible, but is rather just improbable. I think maybe an easier way to look at it, is there are very real things that everyone can do to work towards the ideal of peace and prosperity. It's just that people will opt to not commit to that, simply due to their understanding of it being unrealistic, then convincing themselves to not try. It's well established that we as humans often convince ourselves that things are not possible, simply because they're too difficult to achieve (or we convince ourselves that because it's not possible, we shouldn't make any effort). Thorfinn's commitment to his ideals is what separates him from the rest. This doesn't mean he won't be tested, this doesn't mean he'll completely accomplish the things he's sought after, but it means he'll be a great man, following in the footsteps of his dad. Best boy Zuko said something that has always resonated with me: "Even though you'll probably fail over and over and over again... You have to try every time."

2025-04-25 18:03:26 +0000 UTCI feel empathy for Gardar, for no man should be clasp in iron and be treated and sold like if it were cattle.... but I feel no sympathy for him, he would've had no qualms in enslaving and selling the women and childrend from the other village had he won his petty squabble for iron they truly didn't need, and what I think is worse, he dragged his wife and child into slavery for his mistakes.

Thorfinn's struggle to choice to fight again us so real. He does not want to but knows he must to protect Arnheid and Gardar and in the moment he is willing to throw away his oath he made in the previous episode to not fight. This is just one step on his path to a true warrior. Reminder there is a short (1:40 minute) episode that occurs between Ep 18 and 19. It is called "VINLAND SAGA SEASON 2 Episode 18.5 "Same old story" it can be found on the MAPPA YouTube page.
