Your Lie In April Episode 13

A beautiful send off...

Comments

na. Hate the dad for not being there at all for his dying wife, or child losing his mother that he clearly loves deeply. We see she was loving and warm before the illness that took her life. Terminal illness, the fear of imminent death and knowing you will be abandoning your child in death would drive any person to extreme behaviors. Hell, we all say shitty things we don't mean when we get merely hungry or sleepy. She felt she needed Kousei to have something, anything, and at any cost. That thing was music/piano which was clearly a beautiful gift that he will treasure for his life. The cost was horrible; awful trauma that nearly costs Kousei the gift and it cost her own humanity/sanity. . She was a very flawed person in horrible circumstances. If Kousei can regain his love and forgive her in a healthy way, you should be able to get there too

This ep is a master class is creating authentic feeling characters with depth. Before this we only really knowing his mom taught him piano, got sick, was abusive, died, and that Kousei loved her deeply anyway. This episode shows she was driven essentially insane from the fear of dying, the fear of abandoning her son who she loved more than anything. If you can't see the mom in a different light after this, you've either yet to deal with specific types of tragedy, or you're not trying to be sympathetic/understanding. Contextually, and this might just be anime, but it seems like physical punishment is not uncommon or socially/legally unacceptable in Japanese culture. The mother devastatingly scars Arima thru horrible behavior. Seeing the terrified person facing death behind the villain mask makes it so much more heartbreaking. Esp after seeing how gentle and loving she was before her illness. I almost wonder if it's less that he can't 'hear the music' and more he lost the warm, gentle, loving touch in his life that his mother taught him. Also, where the fkkk is her husband/his father!!! He's the real bad guy. I think he's traveling for work this whole time?! Dude needed to quit his job and be with his dying wife and young child. He's the real bad guy in all this. And poor Kousei, so damaged from the trauma of seeing his mother turn into a monster he wished dead, then her dying shortly after, and being left ALONE after that as like a 10ish yo. They have plenty of money judging from their house, sell that sht and move into a small apt and get a way less demanding job if that's what it takes to be with your child.

I still hate the mom

Saki using Love's Sorrow to get Kosei used to sorrow hurts. She knew that her loss would always linger after she was gone, and she wanted him to be prepared. It's too bad she got so abusive as her time ran out.
