There's definitely a lot more grounded fighting in the original Dragon Ball. But there's some pretty intense fights on the ground in Z and Super too. A lot of Goku's fight with Perfect Cell is on the ground, same with Goku's fight with Hit. Also I would say that most the gods aren't being logical about hating Goku, but the angels who won't be erased aren't really looking for someone to blame.
