For the water thing, you fill the 5-gallon jug. Then you pour that into the 3-gallon jug until it's full. Then you have 2 gallons left in the 5-gallon jug. Pour out the 3-gallon jug and then pour the 2 gallons that are still in the 5-gallon over into the 3-gallon jug. Now fill the empty 5-gallon jug and pour 1 gallon into the 3-gallon jug, which fills it, leaving 4 gallons left in the 5-gallon. The key bit to the elephant joke is that an elephant has a trunk, making it ready to travel.
