Many of these moments act as a test for a Subaru, where he must choose between the path of sin of the path of virtue. For example, episode 18 when Subaru wanted to run away with Rem he was being tempted by the path of sloth. Instead of facing a the challenge presented before him, he was tempted to run away from them and leave all his problems behind, luckily Subaru made the right choice in the end and instead chose the path of diligence. This story is packed with moments like this one where Subaru must choose between two paths and thankfully he’s made the right decision every time.However every year on Subaru birthday the author releases a non canonical story explaining what would have happened if Subaru made the wrong choice

They had a count of the warriors who went to fight the white whale the previous time before subaru came to the world. So by noticing how many people were left, they concluded that something was wrong. After defeating the white whale, they said that they would not be able to fully pay tribute to the fallen soldiers because no one remembered them.
