HATE how long it took for us to get to celebrate black dancers in the professional ballet scene but we are seeing more and more represented which makes my heart soar!

2024-09-11 08:49:35 +0000 UTCFun fact: I'm flat footed and historically in the military it was also used as a way to deter Black Americans during recruitments because for us we often have flat feet genetically. Thankfully it's now more widely accepted! Also, (short story-time) as a kid there were no black ballerinas to look up too and at the time I was taking ballet classes. One night, when I was sitting with my grandparents watching the news it said "The first ever black ballerina to..." I was stunned! It was Misty Copeland and in 2015 she was the first Black woman in ABT's 75yr company history to become a main ballet dancer. It was really cool because she was flat footed and my grandparents said they had never seen a black ballerina before! Let alone a short, flat footed, successful one (so they kept encouraging me because I was most of those things 😭) Her story was sad but it made me love and hate ballet all at the same time. (I quit btw because not only is it mentally draining it's financially draining and at the time I was super poor) I hope they don't go too hard on some of them for that tho! I can't wait! 💗

I agree that the whole preview going in specifically on the looks was not my favorite but I know they will most likely focus on more things in the future within the episodes

2024-09-04 18:50:15 +0000 UTCI'm excited about this! I feel more qualified in my opinions on these styles since I actually did them growing up. I'm also glad they are doing the show with the men and not women. As brutal as all the judging critiques will be, I think they would be harsher for women.

It's definitely different from the Street series where diversity was showcased and highlighted a lot. Can't wait to hear more of your insights whole watching though!!
